Mortal Kombat II

Tarkata demands respect, Shao Kahn! We are done fearing you!

—Baraka to Shao Kahn in Mortal Kombat 11.

Baraka is a character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. The former general of the Tarkatan Horde, he has served as an antagonist throughout the series, serving Outworld and its Empire while being loyal to the half-Tarkatan Mileena and her father Shao Kahn.

Baraka made his debut in Mortal Kombat II as the first playable Tarkatan of the series and has been a recurring antagonist since. Baraka returned in Mortal Kombat 11 as a playable character, this time serving as a supporting character in the game's Story Mode.

A new version of Baraka appears in Mortal Kombat 1 as a playable character while once again serving as a supporting character in the game's Story Mode.

About Baraka

Baraka was introduced in Mortal Kombat II as a mean, frightening, and unpredictable Outworld warrior in service of Emperor Shao Kahn. He belongs to a race of nomadic mutants, later revealed in Mortal Kombat: Deception to be called Tarkata, who populate the vast wastelands of Outworld. Originally, this race was said to be a crossbreed between Netherrealm demons and Outworlders. In the alternate timeline, this is retconned, in which the Tarkatans are now their own separate species within Outworld, originating from an unnamed realm that was conquered long ago by Shao Kahn. As with all Tarkatans, Baraka is cannabalistic and possesses long, retractable blades extending from his forearms, making him one of the deadliest fighters in the Mortal Kombat universe.

Although he has had many incursions with Earthrealm's warriors, he does not appear to have any particular rivalry or hatred towards Earth or its inhabitants. His main interest is in doing what is best for his own people. To this end, Baraka will side with anyone whose objectives would ensure the welfare of his race.

Baraka is the leader of the Tarkatan Army, being a General of the Horde under Shao Kahn's rule. The only Tarkatan superior to Baraka is the genetic hybrid Mileena, created by Shang Tsung for the Emperor as a replacement daughter after he found Kitana inferior. In the new timeline, he is still the leader of the Tarkatans, however, the race is now deformed Outworlders and Edenians infected with the Tarkat disease and outcasted by the non-infected inhabitants of Outworld.

Character Development

While brainstorming possible character ideas for Mortal Kombat II, several designers visited a local costume shop and found a Nosferatu mask. They painted the mask to enhance its horrifying appearance and added false fingernails to appear as long fangs. This mask was worn by Richard Divizio, the actor who portrayed Baraka in the game. In a video interview, on the bonus DVD included with the special edition of Mortal Kombat: Deception, Divizio stated that the mask was a "skin-tight" fit, and throughout his motion capture filming, he was sweating profusely. "He was a pretty cool character," Divizio said to Electronic Gaming Monthly in 1994, "but I didn't like him too much".

Early Baraka concept art by character designer John Tobias portrayed him as a masked, bald human ninja armed with hook swords. The early design’s costume consisted of an entirely red, black, and yellow color scheme, with a large yellow circle on his stomach. Baraka’s hook swords were later used by Kabal — also played by Divizio — in Mortal Kombat 3.

Another Baraka concept portrayed him as a creature with extra-long, metal talon-studded, muscular arms, but it was felt this might create an unfair reach advantage and so was re-sketched with blades inspired by the X-Men's Wolverine, whose claws extend from his hands. The arm blades have changed throughout his appearances in the series, changing from looking metallic to looking white in color. Additionally, Baraka's arm blades looked like a singular elongated blade, but in MKX, they were given an arrowhead-like tip. These versions of his blades are also noticeably shorter, however in the mobile game, they are much longer. In MK11, Baraka's arm blades seem to look more bone-like and it appears he is able to break off and regrow his arm blades at will, as seen in his Fatal Blow and various new abilities. MK11 also allows Baraka to change the design of his blades, whether retaining the default appearance from the game or different colored variations of the same blades, to his metallic blades from earlier games, to various different blades sharped to different points.

The third and final attempt at a Baraka design included a full head of black hair tied up in a bun, and a large red dot on his belt to go along with his familiar red-and-white tunic and black pants. The red dot, added simply as a decoration, was axed because it was misinterpreted as symbolizing the red dot on the Japanese flag, and the hair was gone shortly thereafter, finalizing Baraka's bald look used throughout the MK series.

In MKX, Baraka had two little spikes coming out on each of his upper cheeks on his face in order to make him more unique and easier to identify among other Tarkatans. Additionally, his face was altered to be much different than normal Tarkatans, allowing Baraka more freedom to show more emotion in his face during cutscenes. In MK11, Baraka's appearance was altered once again, this time removing the cheek spikes from MKX to return him to his more classic appearance. Despite this change, he is still given subtle changes to differentiate him from other Tarkatan warriors, most notably a bulkier build compared to the more skinnier or leaner Tarkatans. Another change is that Baraka's arm-blades in the Story Mode are sharpened to a point and have a metallic appearance compared to his Arcade arm-blades which are bone-like, a change resembling his klassic arm-blades. Similar to the other Tarkatans are the shoulder spikes protruding from his shoulders, another noticeable change. Depending on the Kosmetic Outfit selected, Baraka can change from four different outfits that feature a look similar to his klassic MKII appearance or a topless variation of the same one, or two different outfits featuring different Tarkatan-based body paints and tattoos.

Throughout the franchise, Baraka has been depicted as a recurring antagonist, supporting many of the major antagonists of the series such as Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung, as well as the half-Tarkatan Mileena. This role changes with his depiction in Mortal Kombat 11. After the revelation of what happened to the Tarkata following the events of Mortal Kombat X, Baraka slowly abandons his allegiance to Shao Kahn and, later to Kronika, who had promised to completely restore the Tarkata upon the success of her New Era. Baraka later decides to aid Kitana and the others by a means of uniting Outworld that had been in a civil war between its people for the last 25 years. He makes amends with Kotal Kahn who was responsible for the Tarkatan's extinction in the alternate timeline and serves Kitana, who later becomes the Empress of Outworld.

Baraka's backstory is once again expanded upon in the current timeline, bringing more sympathy and humanity to the character never depicted before in the series. This version of Baraka is a former Edenian merchant plagued by the Tarkat disease, horribly disfiguring him and branding him an outcast among Outworld's people. As others succumb to the sickness, Baraka takes it upon himself to lead the infected inhabitants as the leader of the Tarkatans in the Tarkatan Colony to prevent their capture, detainment and execution by the Outworld army to prevent the spread of Tarkat. He proves helpful to Johnny Cage and Kenshi in their plans to stop Shang Tsung and even protects them from other hostile forces including his own mutant Tarkatans sent by Shang Tsung to kill them. He reveals to a wounded Kenshi that before succumbing to Tarkat, Baraka had a family, a wife and children, only to lose them to the disease. He feels the best thing is for death at the hands of the disease to see his family again, however his body was not affected the same way as his family. Despite longing for his own death, Baraka wishes to protect the other Tarkatans from their impending demise, whether this being from the Tarkat disease or from the hostilities of Outworld's people rejecting them.

Game Information

In the early stages of Mortal Kombat II, Baraka was going to be given a Fatality in which he would slice his opponent's stomach open and let their entrails spill to the ground. This was actually deemed too gory, even for Mortal Kombat by the development team and still has not been seen in game-form. This would eventually become Kabal's Fatality in Mortal Kombat 2011.

Baraka's biggest drawback in his first appearance was that he lacked a moving special attack, and was thusly considered to be a low-tier character. Although only he and Jax (a high-tier) shared this problem, Jax's other specials were considered much better than Baraka's. This, combined with a bug that allowed opponents to leg sweep Baraka far out of normal range during his Blade Spark (due to a forward-extended blade when firing it), ensured his place near the bottom. Baraka was given better special moves in later games to improve his repertoire, and the sweep bug was fixed.

In Mortal Kombat Gold, Baraka has a scar lined with large metal staples splitting his body straight down the middle. According to a render of Baraka and Mileena found in Deception's Krypt, this was the end result of Baraka's brush with Kung Lao's Hat Slice fatality during Mortal Kombat Trilogy (although this fatality is only usable in MK2 and Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks). Baraka survived the attack and the staples were implemented to hold his body together while he healed. However, an unused bio for Baraka had him dying from Kung Lao's attack and being revived by Shinnok. This bio was released in a few strategy guides for the game, sparking the misconception that he had actually died.

In Mortal Kombat: Deception, after the use of a special move, Baraka's blades which came out in the process of the move would slide back in without a sound. However, if the player executes a special move in the Blade style, the blades will never shoot back in. Baraka is also revealed to be "The Scourge Of Outworld". This is the exact title given to Kintaro in the Malibu series of Mortal Kombat comics. Also, if Baraka is defeated in the first round, he will lift himself up using his blades and start the next round using his blades as his fighting style. He is the only character to switch to or remain in his weapon style after being defeated. All other characters revert to their first fighting style if using weapons, or remain in the same style if not.

In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon and in Mortal Kombat: Deception, Baraka is playable in all the mini-games available, these include Chess Kombat, Puzzle Kombat, and Motor Kombat.

Appearance

Combat Characteristics

Powers and Abilities

As a Tarkatan, Baraka possesses greater stamina and fighting power than a normal human, along with his trademark weapon - the Tarkatan blades that extend from his forearms. He is also shown in many cases to have a highly acute sense of smell, as he can tell the true identity of targets by their scent, and a potent healing factor, as he was able to survive Kung Lao's Body Slice Fatality in the events of Mortal Kombat Trilogy (though he required giant staples to hold his body together). With the addition of body spikes in MK11, he can now shoot the spikes out of his back as a defensive maneuver. Additionally, Baraka now seems to be able to break off and regrow his Tarkatan Blades at will as seen in various special attacks but most noticeably his Fatal Blow.

In Mortal Kombat 1, Arcade interactions with General Shao reveal Baraka was a soldier in the Outworld army at some point in time before resigning and living his life as an Edenian merchant with his family. After being infected with Tarkat, his physical appearance changes to that of his previous timeline counterparts, causing him his disfigured body but granting superhuman strength, speed, agility and his signature arm-blades. Similar to his depiction in Mortal Kombat 11, Baraka is able to break off his arm-blades and regrow them constantly.

Signature Moves

  • Flying Shard: Baraka fires a spark by scraping his blades together and aiming at his opponent. The attack is called Spark in MK 2011 and Blade Spark in MK11. In MK1, this attack is called Bleeding Blade, and Baraka shoots an entire arm blade at the opponent, quickly re-growing it rather than sharpening his blades and sending the spark at the opponent like in earlier depictions. Additionally in MK1, the attack can be used in the air, this time called (Air) Blade Sparks, in which Baraka shoots a barrage of sparks from his arms, knocking the opponent to the ground. (MKII, MKT, MKG, MK:D, MK:SM, MK:A, MKvsDCU, MK 2011, MKX, MK11, MK1)
    • The enhanced version is called Sparked which causes a knockdown as well as increases the damage.
    • In MK11, amplifying the attack sends a second larger spark for additional damage. The second spark has an increased hitbox and can hit ducking opponents, unlike the first.
    • In MK1, enhancing the attack deals increased damage and causing the opponent to lose 3% of their health through damage-over-time.
      • Enhancing the airborne version of the attack stuns the opponent, setting them up for a free hit. When used on an airborne or juggled opponent, the attack bounces them off the ground for combo extensions. This version does not cause damage-over-time.
  • Chop Chop Blades: Baraka slices his opponent up vertically with his blades numerous times. In MK vs DCU, he follows up with his Mutant Blades move. In MK 2011 Baraka repeatedly stabs his opponent in the gut rather than slashing them, and is only called Chop Chop. In MKX, Baraka can continue combos after using Chop Chop, however this is only offered in the corner of an arena. In MK11, the attack is much slower, however Baraka can extend the duration of how many times he stabs the opponent, stabbing the opponent a total of 9 times. In MK1, Baraka now slides forward towards the opponent, impaling them in the gut, similar to Blade Charge, before slashing them four times, with the final slash knocking them to the ground. Baraka is able to dodge projectiles or other High attacks if times correctly. (MKII, MKT, MKG, MK:D, MK:SM, MK:A, MKvsDCU, MK 2011, MKX, MK11, MK1)
    • The enhanced version is called Chop Chop Shop and stabs the opponent two more times. In MKX, Baraka can continue combos after using Chop Chop Shop, however this is only offered in the corner of an arena.
    • In MK11, Baraka can amplify the attack to deliver additional strikes for increased damage. The attack can be amplified as many times as possible, however the standard amount has Baraka deliver additional strikes after amplifying the attack twice.
      • Amplifying the attack the first time adds 4 additional strikes.
      • Amplifying the attack a second time adds 2 more strikes to the previous.
    • In MK1, the enhanced version grants armor and increased damage. Baraka can also enhance the attack a second time, in which he impales the downed opponent in the back for even more damage. This second enhanced version can be performed if the regular version of the attack connects.
  • Blade Swipe: Baraka performs a quick, strong swipe at the opponent with his blade. This move is implemented an advancing auto-combo move called Slices in MK 2011. In MK11, this is a basic attack rather than a special attack. (MKII, MKT, MKG, MK:SM, MK 2011, MKX, MK11).
    • The enhanced version is called Slicer. Baraka adds an uppercut to the end of the Slices combo.
  • Blade Spin: Baraka would spin like a top with his blades extended, damaging his opponent. Baraka could spin indefinitely in the MKT version of this attack. In MK1, this attack is called Baraka Barrage, and is performed similar to how the attack is used in MK 2011 and MKX, however Baraka leaps into the air with the final strike, knocking the opponent to the ground. (MKT, MKG, MKvsDCU, MK 2011, MKX, MK1)
    • The enhanced version is called Spinner and connects with two more slices in his vicious spin.
    • In MK1, enhancing the attack deals slightly increased damage and bounces the opponent off the ground for a juggle.
  • Blade Charge: Baraka quickly lunges at his opponent with both blades out. In MK vs DCU, this move appears after Baraka's Chop Chop Blades connects. In MK11, Baraka charges at the opponent to lift them by his blades, then punches them away or has the option to throw the opponent in the opposite direction. This attack has armor breaking properties, ignoring the armor granted by specific abilities and Fatal Blows. When breaking the armor of a Breakaway, the attack deals slightly increased damage. This ability conflicts with Blood Lunge when equipped, disabling the option to select Blood Lunge. (MK:D, MK:A, MKvsDCU, MK 2011, MKX, MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • The enhanced version is called Blade Rush. This increases the damage and range.
    • In MK11, if the opponent fails to block at the right time when Baraka lands the attack or breaks armor, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, where when Baraka punches the opponent off his blades, the punch crushes the side of the opponent's jaw and deals over double the attack's original damage. This Krushing Blow can only be triggered by either of these conditions once during the match. Like with the original, when breaking the armor of a Breakaway, the attack deals slightly increased damage.
      • This Krushing Blow damage can be increased slightly if War Banner is active.
  • Scrape Kick: Baraka releases his Tarkatan Blades and launches at his opponent with his legs. This attack is a command attack rather than a special move in MK 2011. Baraka is very vulnerable if this attack misses his foe completely. (MKvsDCU, MK 2011)
  • Triple Flying Shard: Baraka jumps high and shoots three shards at once. (MK:SM)
  • Air Blade Spin: After a jump, Baraka spins like a top, damaging his opponent. (MK:SM)
  • War Banner: Baraka spawns a War Banner and plants it into the ground to the sound of a horn. Once planted, all Baraka's damage dealt is increased by 20% as long as the Banner remains on the fightline, with the exception of his damage-over-time effects. Connecting or being struck by a Krushing Blow or Fatal Blow ends this effect prematurely. Baraka also plants his War Banner at the end of his Fatal Blow (See Below). Only the first strike of the Baraka's Fatal Blow gains the damage bonus. (MK11)
  • Blood Lunge: Baraka leaps at his opponent, tackling them to the ground where he impales them in the chest with his arm-blades. The attack is a High Throw, making it unblockable but can be avoided entirely if the opponent ducks. This attack is capable of striking an opponent during a Getup Roll, similar to a standard Throw. This ability conflicts with Blade Charge when equipped, disabling the option to select Blade Charge and requires two ability slots when equipped. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • If the attack is performed on an opponent who is using a Getup Roll, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, where when Baraka impales the opponent, his blades are dug significantly deeper, causing blood to splatter, dealing increased damage and causing the opponent to lose 10% of their health through damage-over-time.
      • This Krushing Blow damage can be increased slightly if War Banner is active. This also includes the damage-over-time's damage, however a War Banner must be planted after the Krushing Blow triggers.
  • Leg Kabob: Baraka stabs the opponent in the knee with his arm-blade, and snaps the arm-blade off, causing minor damage-over-time to the opponent. This attack also re-stands the opponent. This ability conflicts with Gutted when equipped, disabling the option to select Gutted. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Amplifying the attack does not have Baraka break off the arm blade, but rather stab the opponent in the side of the neck, pick them up and throw them away for over double the original damage. Baraka is also given the option to throw the opponent in the opposite direction. This version of the attack does not cause a damage-over-time effect
    • If the attack is used on an opponent that was blocking while standing, amplifying the attack turns it into a Krushing Blow, where when Baraka stabs the opponent's neck, he stabs in the center of their throat, causing blood to splatter, dealing slightly increased damage and causing the opponent to lose 10% of their health through damage-over-time.
      • This Krushing Blow damage can be increased slightly if War Banner is active. This also includes the damage-over-time's damage, however a War Banner must be planted after the Krushing Blow triggers.
  • Gutted: Baraka grabs his opponent by the shoulder, stabs them in the stomach with his arm blade and headbutts the opponent, knocking them down. This ability conflicts with Leg Kabob when equipped, disabling the option to select Leg Kabob and requires two ability slots when equipped. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Amplifying the attack has Baraka throw the opponent in the air after stabbing them, breaking off and leaving the arm-blade in their stomach in the process, causing minor damage-over-time, dealing increased damage, and launching the opponent in the air for a juggle. Connecting a second Gutted after performing an amplified Gutted will end the damage-over-time effect immediately upon connecting the second one.
    • If this attack is performed in a combo of 9 or more hits or the attack brings the combo to 9 hits, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, where when Baraka stabs the opponent, the arm blade is dug significantly deeper, causing blood to splatter, dealing increased damage and causing the opponent to lose 10% of their health through damage-over-time after he headbutts the opponent. The Krushing Blow version of the attack cannot be amplified nor can the attack be amplified if the Krushing Blow requirement was met during the combo. The damage-over-time effect from the Krushing Blow can stack with an amplified Gutted damage-over-time, however as stated above, connecting a second Gutted after doing this ends the damage-over-time prematurely.
      • This Krushing Blow damage can be increased slightly if War Banner is active. This also includes the damage-over-time's damage, however a War Banner must be planted after the Krushing Blow triggers.
  • War Banner Bash: When Baraka spawns his War Banner, he now strikes the opponent with it before planting it, knocking them away and to the ground. When blocked by the opponent, this attack creates considerable pushback. Despite this pushback effect, Baraka is still vulnerable to some attacks when the attack is blocked by the opponent. This ability modifies War Banner when equipped. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
  • War Banner Charge: While next to a planted War Banner, Baraka grabs it and charges at his opponent with it, striking and knocking them down, roaring in triumph and replants the Banner. While charging, Baraka is granted unlimited armor until he makes contact with the opponent. Additionally, Baraka can charge and travel full-screen distance to his opponent and can cancel charging if he wants. When utilizing this ability, it will reset Baraka's War Banner's damage buff after he replants it after charging. Baraka cannot perform this attack if he is not near the War Banner nor if the War Banner is not planted. Additionally, Baraka will not replant the War Banner if the opponent blocks the attack, causing it to immediately disintegrate after being blocked. This ability conflicts with Baraka-Serker when equipped, disabling the option to select Baraka-Serker. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
  • Staked: While next to a planted War Banner, Baraka grabs it and sweeps the opponent before impaling them in the chest with the Banner and roaring. Unlike War Banner Charge, after Baraka impales the opponent, he will not replant the Banner, thus removing the Banner and its damage bonus. If the opponent blocks the attack, Baraka will only connect the sweep, and the Banner will disappear with the same effect as stated before. Baraka cannot perform this attack if he is not near the War Banner nor if the War Banner is not planted. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
  • Baraka-Serker: Baraka slashes his opponent three consecutive times with his arm blades before delivering a cross chop with his blades, knocking the opponent down and away form Baraka. Baraka travels almost full-screen distance when slashing towards the opponent, ending sweep-distance away from his opponent. This ability conflicts with War Banner Charge when equipped, disabling the option to select War Banner Charge. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • The attack can only be amplified if Blade Charge is also equipped with this ability. This attack has armor breaking properties, ignoring the armor granted by specific abilities and Fatal Blows. Additionally, this version of Blade Charge creates a considerable amount of knockback when blocked by the opponent.
      • Amplifying the attack has Baraka perform Blade Charge at the end of the attack instead of the cross chop with his blades. Like Blade Charge, doing this allows Baraka to throw the opponent away behind him. Additionally, when amplified, Baraka can reach the opponent from traveling full-screen distance with the original attack as he charges with Blade Charge instead. Unlike the original version of Blade Charge, Baraka is much more safe if Blade Charge is performed this way and blocked by the opponent. Additionally, this version of Blade Charge creates a pushback effect when blocked by the opponent. However, it is possible for this attack to be Flawless Blocked by the opponent, leaving Baraka completely vulnerable.
    • The attack can only trigger a Krushing Blow if Blade Chage is equipped with this ability.
      • If the opponent fails to block at the right time when Baraka lands the attack or if Baraka uses the attack to break a form of armor, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, where when Baraka punches the opponent off his blades, the punch crushes the side of the opponent's jaw and deals over double the attack's original damage. This Krushing Blow can only be triggered by either of these conditions once during the match. Like with the original, when breaking the armor of a Breakaway, the attack deals slightly increased damage.
        • This Krushing Blow damage can be increased slightly if War Banner is active.
  • Spine Burst: Baraka shoots a series of spikes from his back, with blood spurting out when the spikes fly. When used in the corner of an arena, Baraka is offered a moment of combo extensions; otherwise, the opponent will be knocked away. The attack is also capable of striking airborne targets. Additionally, it will not hit ducking opponents. This attack is also considered a projectile. This ability replaces Chop Chop when equipped. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
  • Stab Stab: Baraka swings his arm-blades in an arc, knocking the opponent to the ground. When used on an airborne or juggled opponent, Baraka impales the opponent in the stomach before repeatedly stabbing them before throwing them to the ground, dealing increased damage. Baraka is given the option to throw the opponent in the opposite direction. (MK1)
    • Enhancing the attack on aa grounded opponent offers no changes to the attack, however when used on an airborne or juggled opponent, the attack deals increased damage, causes the opponent to lose 10% of their health through damage-over-time, and increases Chip Damage dealt to them by Baraka for the duration of the damage-over-time.
  • (Air) Death Spin: While in the air, curls into a ball with his blades extended and flies at the opponent before stabbing downward with his blades, knocking the opponent to the ground. Baraka can strike the opponent full-screen distance away. (MK1)
    • Enhancing the attack allows it to be delayed while airborne, offering differing results. Delaying the attack in its entirety deals increased damage.

X-Rays/Fatal Blow

  • X-Ray - Nail and Impale: Baraka rushes forward, impaling his opponent with both blades & lifts them up like in his MKII Fatality. He then rams his left blade through their carotid artery damaging the neck, throat and jaw and then through the eye socket causing damage in the skull. After this, Baraka kicks the opponent off his blades and sending them flying back with a trail of blood. (MK 2011)
  • Fatal Blow - Skewered: Baraka jabs his opponent in the gut, then plunges one arm blade through their raised hand, before impaling them through the chest. He then snaps off the arm blade and swiftly punches them across the face before plunging his other arm blade upwards through their head. He then impales the opponent in the gut with his War Banner before kicking them to the ground. Baraka plants his War Banner after, gaining its effect. (MK11)
  • Fatal Blow - Shishkabob: Baraka drives his arm blades into the ground to create a large spark, letting his Kameo partner to perform their attack. After they're done, Baraka impales the opponent with his arm blade on their stomach and lifts them up before stabbing the other arm blade four times in the chest and driving it through their neck after before tossing them to the ground. (MK1)

Other Moves

  • Free-Fall Super Move: Baraka performs his Blade Spin move before swiping at his opponent with one blade, knocking them to the ground. (MKvsDCU)
  • Throw: Baraka lifts his opponent up in a choke, then promptly extends his blades through their face before either kicking them off (forward) or flings them away (backward). (MK 2011, MKX)
  • Overhead Toss: Baraka's throw in older games. He performs a quick, two-handed overhead throw with a shout, sending his foe clear across the screen. (MKII, MKT)
  • Backhand Strike: Baraka quickly strikes his opponent in the face with the back of his fist. (MKII)
  • Double Kick: Perhaps the first instance of a button combo in MK, Baraka's close-up knee can be extended into a snap kick, lifting his opponent off the ground. (MKII)
  • Throw (Forward): Baraka knees his opponent in the face and bites a chunk out of their arm before kicking them to the ground. (MK11)
    • If Baraka performs this on an opponent who has failed a Throw Escape during a previous Throw before, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, where when Baraka bites the opponent, he rips a large chuck of flesh from the opponent's arm before kicking them away, increasing the damage of his Throw (Forward) by over double the original damage. If this is successful, Baraka can not perform the Krushing Blow version of his Throw (Backward). If the opponent successfully performs a Throw Escape before the Krushing Blow is performed, the next Throw performed will not trigger a Krushing Blow.
      • This Krushing Blow damage can be increased slightly if War Banner is active.
  • Throw (Backward): Baraka headbutts his opponent and bites a chunk out of their leg before tossing them in the opposite direction. (MK11)
    • If Baraka performs this on an opponent who has failed a Throw Escape during a previous Throw before, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, where when Baraka bites the opponent, he rips a large chuck of flesh from the opponent's leg before tossing them away, increasing the damage of his Throw (Backward) by over double the original damage. If this is successful, Baraka can not perform the Krushing Blow version of his Throw (Forward). If the opponent successfully performs a Throw Escape before the Krushing Blow is performed, the next Throw performed will not trigger a Krushing Blow.
      • This Krushing Blow damage can be increased slightly if War Banner is active.
  • Baraka Barrage: Baraka gains access to three new basic attacks using his arm blades, extending his reach. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Straight Shank: Baraka pokes the opponent's shin with his arm blade.
    • Low Shank: Baraka stabs the opponent's foot with his arm blade.
    • Sinister Shank: While airborne, Baraka extends his arm blade to stab the opponent.
  • Outworld Bash: Baraka hits the opponent across the face, then in the gut and ends in a double handed overhead smash which knocks the opponent down. The second strike of this combo is capable of being Flawless Blocked by the opponent, leaving Baraka vulnerable to Flawless Block Attacks. (MK11)
    • If this combo is performed on the opponent as a Kounter or Punish, the combo turns into a Krushing Blow, with the double overhead smash shattering the top of the opponent's head, dealing increased damage and bouncing them into the air for a juggle.
      • This Krushing Blow damage can be increased slightly if War Banner is active.
  • Doom Kicks: Baraka lunges forward and knees the opponent, then extends into a kick to the chest that knocks the opponent away. This combo is very similar to Double Kick. (MK11)
    • If this combo is performed on the opponent as a Kounter or Punish, the combo turns into a Krushing Blow, with the kick to the chest shattering the opponent's ribcage, dealing increased damage. While the original effect of knocking the opponent away is still present, Baraka is also granted a window to use special attacks after. When used in the corner of an arena, this opportunity is greatly increased, as it can allow Baraka to perform other special attacks that grant juggle effects.
      • This Krushing Blow damage can be increased slightly if War Banner is active.
  • Quick Taste (Backward Throw): Baraka bites a chunk of flesh out of the opponent's neck, pushes them to the other side and stabs them in the gut with both arm blades, knocking them down. (MK1)
  • Heel Drop: Baraka hops forward and brings his foot down in an overhead attack. This attack can avoid Low attacks if timed correctly. (MK1)

Fatalities

  • Blade Decapitation: Baraka extends a blade and severs his opponent's head with a single slice. (MKII, MKT, MKG, MK:SM)
  • Blade Lift: Extending both blades, Baraka stabs his opponent in the torso and lifts them high. The victim screams and flails about helplessly before expiring, the limp form twitching as it slides down the deadly shears. In Shaolin Monks, Baraka spreads out his arms, cutting the torso into pieces. In Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, he slices the foe twice, then lifts and throws them behind him. (MKII, MKT, MKG, MK:SM, MKvsDCU)
  • Mutant Dissection: Baraka uses his blades to slice the arms, legs, and neck of his victim, then stabs the torso and rips it out, leaving the arms, head, and legs behind. (MK:D, MK:U)
  • Head Spike: Baraka uppercuts his opponent's head off, then skewers it on his arm blade, holding it up in victory. (MK:D, MK:U)
  • Chest Stab: Baraka kicks the opponent to the ground, jumps on top of them with his hands at their chest, and abruptly extends his blades, effectively ending their life. (MKvsDCU)
  • Up the Middle: Baraka slices off the opponent's arms, then impales them through the chest with one of his arm blades before slicing the opponent vertically in half with the other blade. Baraka then lifts up an half of the opponent's body still attached to his blade in victory. (MK 2011)
  • Take a Spin: Baraka impales the opponent in the stomach with his blade, lifting them over his head, then he spins them around while using his other blade to cut off their arms, legs, and head. (MK 2011)
  • Food For Thought: Baraka rips off the opponent's face, revealing their eyeballs and muscles, causing them to fall to their knees, then rips off their faceplate, exposing their brain. As the victim falls to the ground, Baraka skewers their brain on his arm blade and takes a bite. (MK11)
  • Rock, Paper, Baraka: Baraka impales the opponent with his blades through their torso, pulling upward, nearly cutting off their arms, leaving the shoulders dangling. He proceeds to cross his blades at the opponent's throat, slicing and cutting their head off, sending it into the air. As the head falls down and the body falls over, Baraka cuts the head vertically in half and impales both pieces with his blades as they fall. (MK11)
  • Split Decision: Baraka stabs the opponent through their stomach with both of his blades. He then lifts them up, puts the blades through the eyes and pulls back the Tarkatan blades, slicing them in a way that exposes their organs. The body then falls to the ground. (MK1)
  • Four Piece Kombo: Baraka drives his hand into the opponent's gut, pulling out their intestines, and launches them upwards with a knee strike. He then uses a Blade Spark to create a fire on the ground and grabs the intestine as he cackles maniacally, leaving the opponent roasting over the fire as he and three other Tarkatans pull off their limbs and start eating them. (MK1)

Brutalities

Mortal Kombat 11

  • The Klassic: Baraka performs his uppercut, decapitating the opponent with an upward slash of his arm-blades with their spine still attached.
  • Nom Nom: Baraka performs his Throw (Forward), biting the opponent's arm and ripping if off as they scream in agony as blood gushes from the severed wound. While they scream, Baraka lets the blood from the severed arm pour onto his face before performing his Brutality Victory Pose.
  • Severed: Baraka performs a Leg Kabob, cutting the opponent's leg off. While they stumble backwards and die from blood loss, Baraka briefly raises his arms up in a victorious pose with their leg still on his arm blade before throwing it away and performing his Brutality Victory Pose.
  • Sparkler: Baraka performs a Blade Spark that passes through the opponent and leaves a gaping hole through their chest.
  • Thumbtack: Baraka performs a Blood Lunge, only this time, he spawns his War Banner and impales the opponent through the head with the Banner.
  • Stuck: Baraka performs a Blade Charge, only this time, instead of punching the opponent, he taunts them as he picks them up and then cuts them in half across the stomach with his arm-blades while still suspending them in the air.
  • Capped: Baraka performs a War Banner or War Banner Bash, then Baraka performs a Staked, cutting off the opponent's legs at the knees and then impaling them through the top of their head with the top of his War Banner. The opponent crawls away briefly with the Banner still in their head before dying.
  • Cut Up: Baraka performs a Chop Chop, only this time, the attack is extended greatly where he repeatedly stabs the opponent so much that their limbs slowly fall off one by one and gets faster and faster as each limb falls off. This creates a gaping hole in their stomach and leaves only one arm behind.
  • A Leg Up: Baraka performs his Throw (Backward), only this time, he cuts the opponent's leg then forcibly rips it off, only to beat the opponent to death with their severed leg before tossing the leg away. The opponent bleeds out as Baraka performs his Brutality Victory Pose.
  • Straight Cut: Baraka performs a Blade Swipe and cuts off the opponent's head.
  • Tis A Flesh Wound: Baraka performs a Lunging Blades that chops off the opponent's arms.

Mortal Kombat 1

  • Nom Nom: Baraka performs his Backwards Throw and keeps biting his opponent's chest, eviscerating them and eating their innards, leaving only a hollowed-out torso.
  • Chop Shop: Baraka performs Chop Chop and drives his blades into the opponent's chest, lifting them up and letting them slide down before dislodging one of the blades and chopping them in half at the waist.
  • Empty Inside: Baraka performs Stab Stab, only this time, he keeps stabbing them before letting their blood pour on to his body before slowing lower the opponent's corpse.
  • Old School: Baraka performs the Euthanizer kombo and chops off the opponent's head.
  • Tis A Flesh Wound: Baraka performs Heel Drop that destroys the opponent's head on impact.

Other Finishers

  • Friendship #1 - Present Box: Baraka stands upright, then produces a gift box and holds it out towards the opponent. (MKII, MKT)

Appearances in Other Media

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation

Baraka (played by Dennis Keiffer) appeared in the second Mortal Kombat movie, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, along with another pair of his race. After a brief sword fight with Liu Kang, all three were killed. The shot of "Baraka's" body falling into the firepit surrounding the fighting ring is actually stock footage of Rain doing likewise earlier in the film.

Mortal Kombat: Rebirth

Lateef Crowder played Baraka in Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, where he was depicted as a former plastic surgeon named Dr. Alan Zane.

Zane is described as having accidentally killed a patient, and after that, the thought of being a failed surgeon drove him crazy, making him kill twenty-four more people after going insane. In the short movie, Baraka took his surgery knives, pierced his face, sharpened his teeth, and attached 10-inch blades to his arms. Baraka fought Johnny Cage and killed him.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy

Fraser Aitcheson plays Baraka in Mortal Kombat: Legacy.

Flashbacks in the fourth episode reveal that Baraka led the Tarkatan hordes in the conquest and merging of Edenia with Outworld, slaughtering many innocent Edenians with his blades. Baraka personally executes one of king Jerrod's decoys when he attempts to aid queen Sindel and the infant Kitana in escaping. Baraka executes the decoy using his Blade Lift Fatality. This was Baraka's only appearance in the series.

Comic books

Baraka made several appearances in Malibu Comics' Mortal Kombat comic book series, making his first appearance on the first issue of Goro's miniseries, Prince of Pain. Baraka was portrayed as the classic brawn-over-brains type, and had the distinction of speaking in pidgin English; in the 1993 Midway-created Mortal Kombat II comic book, his only line is "Baraka shows Johnny Cage pain!"

Baraka was also featured in an eponymous one-shot issue by Malibu Comics in 1995. He was also one of the numerous characters who habitually referred to themselves in the third person throughout Malibu's entire MK series. Baraka's background is mostly kept in the comic, having him as the leader of the mutants that form part of Shao Kahn's armies. On the following Battlewave series, though, he changes sides when Shao Kahn starts replacing his mutants with Scorpion's army of undead soldiers. He ends up joining with Kitana, Kung Lao, and Sub-Zero in a rebel force set to defeat the emperor. Despite this, his violent nature often put him at odds with his former comrades.

Trivia

General

  • His name means "bless" in Arabic and "blessing" in Swahili.
  • Since MK1 (2023) Baraka is one of the few characters to fight with bare feet. Others include Reptile, Sheeva, Goro, Kintaro, Drahmin, Moloch, Kobra, Meat, and Blaze.
  • Baraka is one of three playable Tarkatans in the series, the other two being Mileena and the Alien in MKX.
    • Baraka is the only one of the three that is a pure bred Tarkatan that is playable in the series, while the latter are a genetic experiment and a hybrid, both with Tarkatan genes in them.
      • Additionally, Baraka and Mileena are the only playable Tarkatans that are canon, while the Alien's guest appearance in MKX is non-canon.
  • Baraka is the first character to swear in the comic book series and the franchise overall. He interrogated a monk while searching for Kung Lao and tells him: "Well, have a wild fucking guess!" when the monk seems unresponsive.
  • His MKII design is carried over into Deception and Armageddon as an alternate costume.
    • His outfit for the game returns in Mortal Kombat 11, his primary outfit for the game seen in the Story Mode and Arcade being a modified version, while his klassic outfit is unlockable through the Kustomization.
  • He was rumored to be playable in MK3 and UMK3 via a Shang Tsung transformation, with a look similar to Kano's, but with a white stripe. This rumor was proven false by tests and experiments on both games.
  • Before Deception, many fans believed Baraka was dead due to a cutscene recording his death in Mortal Kombat Gold that could be unlocked in the Krypt of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. The other Gold endings were unlocked as a montage while Baraka's ending was a stand-alone unlockable, furthering this belief.
  • Baraka's death in the original timeline mirrors that of his encounter with Kung Lao in MKII, and subsequent reappearance in Mortal Kombat Gold, where he was on the receiving end of Kung Lao's Body Slice Fatality.
  • Baraka's Mutant Dissection Fatality is seen briefly during the movie 40 Year Old Virgin, followed by one of Sub-Zero's Fatalities. However, there is no way for two whole matches to be completed in the short amount of time that passes.
    • They are also seen using Nintendo 64 controllers, despite the fact that they are playing Deception on the Xbox. This is done intentionally for comedic effect.
  • Baraka is one of few pure Outworlders to curse on-screen. This comes from an interaction with Kano where Baraka says "Fuck you and Kronika!", however Baraka curses in his native tongue.
    • The only other known Outworlder to openly curse on-screen was Bo' Rai Cho in Mortal Kombat X during an interaction with the Predator, where Bo' Rai Cho calls him "One ugly motherfucker.".

Mortal Kombat Gold

  • In Mortal Kombat Gold, Baraka's design from the waist-down is recycled from Reptile's Mortal Kombat 4 design, though recolored.
  • In Mortal Kombat Gold, if Meat is selected using Baraka, or Quan Chi uses Baraka's Blade Lift Fatality using his Steal Fatality Fatality, Baraka's entire forearms will replace either characters' forearms to accommodate the use of Tarkatan Blades.

Mortal Kombat: Deception

  • In Deception, he used the Hung Gar fighting style that Reptile had in Deadly Alliance. Drahmin then used the same fighting style in Armageddon.
  • In Konquest mode of Deception, while learning his blade style, an unusual glitch causes his blade to flash purple when he congratulates the player for completing a task.
  • Baraka is seen in the opening scene of Armageddon fighting Kung Lao and is later seen being hit by Shao Kahn's hammer atop the pyramid. In MK 2011, he is seen with his head split in half with Kung Lao's hat in between his halved head, while his left arm is missing but later shown in the spine of Sub-Zero, leading many to believe Baraka killed Sub-Zero but was then killed by Kung Lao.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

  • In his ending in MK vs DCU, Baraka and the Tarkata become the MK counterpart of the DC Comics' alien race, The Dominators.

Mortal Kombat (2011)

  • His alternate costume in MK 2011 is similar to his armor from MK vs DCU and Armageddon.
  • In MK 2011, if Baraka performs a Stage Fatality on the PS3 Exclusive Chamber of the Flame, his Tarkatan Blade will pierce through the opponent as he holds them over the three Fatality choices.
  • Along with Nightwolf, Sonya, Kabal, and Quan Chi, Baraka never appears in Mortal Kombat (2011)'s Story Mode in his alternate costume (with the exception of the intro).
  • Baraka's MK 2011 Ladder Ending is the only one in which Shao Kahn is not physically killed.

Mortal Kombat X

  • Baraka appears as a non-playable, fightable NPC in the game's Story Mode alongside Rain and Sindel. Baraka, along with the latter two, lack X-Ray attacks.
  • Baraka, Sindel, Rain, and Shinnok's Corrupted Form all have a chance to appear as Invasion Bosses.
  • In the reveal trailer for the Kombat Pack 2 DLC, in an alternate, non-canon scene from the Story Mode, an Alien is shown erupting from his chest just before he is supposed to be executed by D'Vorah.

Mortal Kombat Mobile

  • Baraka is playable in MK Mobile, using his character model from the MKX Story Mode. Despite lacking an X-Ray attack like the other NPCs in the Story Mode, Baraka uses an updated version of his X-Ray attack from Mortal Kombat (2011).
  • Despite using his Killer Croc-themed skin for his Lizard Card, Baraka's Lizard Card uses his default arm-blades from the MK11 Arcade.
    • Interestingly, despite the card using his appearance in MK11, he still uses his fighting stance from MK 2011 and his X-Ray for the game rather than his Fatal Blow from MK11.
  • Baraka is the only character to receive a card from MK11 that was not an MK11 Class card.
  • Baraka's Scourge Card was the first card to apply a status condition to the opponent off his Combo-Ender.
  • Baraka's Lizard Card is the only Outworld Card to grant an increase in Critical Chance to all affiliated Outworld Class Cards rather than a Sub-Class.

Mortal Kombat 11

  • Steven Blum voices Baraka in MK11. This comes from him having a minor role in voicing Baraka's Feats of Strength in MK Mobile.
    • When Baraka made his first gameplay appearance for MK11, it was noticed he sounded extremely similar to Reptile in MKX, which drew ire from fans as a result of Steve Blum's vocal performance being almost unchanged from his performance as Reptile in the former.
    • During Jade's gameplay reveal trailer, Baraka's voice was altered to be slightly deeper, this being perceived as the studio changing his vocal audio due to the previous reception, which received a better reception.
    • During the Cassie Cage and Kano Kombat Kast streams, Baraka's voice was once again changed, being significantly deeper and more guttural now.
    • As a result, Baraka is currently the only character revealed for MK11 to go through three different voices.
  • Baraka, along with Kitana, Noob Saibot and Geras were all given DC inspired Kosmetics and Outfits with the release of the Joker.
    • Johnny Cage and Cassie Cage were given Joker inspired attires as well, with Johnny receiving a suit colored to match the Joker, while Cassie was given an entire outfit resembling his sidekick/lover, Harley Quinn. However, these outfits were released prior to the Joker's official release.
  • Despite Spawn obviously being a Hellspawn, Baraka is the only character that refers to him as a human.

Mortal Kombat 1

  • Baraka returns with a revamped backstory, now being a Edenian merchant that was transformed into his current Tarkatan appearance.
  • Interactions with General Shao reveals that Baraka was once an Outworld soldier, although this is never mentioned in the Story Mode.

Errors

Mortal Kombat X

  • When performing an X-Ray on Baraka, it will show he has a human skull. This is seen if Baraka is an Invasion Boss.
    • This error is also present in MK Mobile with X-Ray attacks and Krushing Blows.

Mortal Kombat 11

  • Baraka's arm blades vanish when a Brutality or Fatality is performed on him.
  • When Baraka performs his Outworld Bash Krushing Blow, his retracted arm-blade clips through his hand that faces the camera when shattering the top of the opponent's skull.
  • If Baraka is equipped with a helmet that also covers the back of his head, during gameplay the helmet clips through his neck and surrounding area.
  • When performing his Sparkler Brutality, Baraka can amplify Blade Spark, resulting in a second spark passing through the opponent with no effect to them. This error is present with many characters with specials and combos that result in Brutalities, with the second half of each doing nothing to the opponent.
    • A noticeable error like this is Sub-Zero's Slicing Meat Brutality as he can perform the kicks of his Final Draw combo despite them doing nothing.
  • Baraka's arm blades are not actually connected to his arms, meaning they do not move with Baraka's arms when he does specific actions. This results in the arm blades actually moving on their own in addition to them clipping through Baraka's forearms when already extended when he does certain actions with them.
  • In the Story Mode after Fire God Liu Kang assaults Kronika's Keep with a massive explosion, Baraka and the other fighters are seen storming the front gates of the Keep. If one looks at Baraka as he runs besides Sheeva, Kung Lao and Jade, his arm-blades are completely inverted as he runs, sticking out of his hands and pointing towards Baraka's body.
  • It is possible for Baraka to perform his Stuck Brutality even if his War Banner is not planted.
  • If Baraka performs War Banner Charge and it is parried by Johnny Cage's Mime Time special, Baraka will retain the armor bonus even though he is no longer performing War Banner Charge. After some time, the armor bonus goes away. Additionally, if Baraka is struck by an armor breaking ability, the glitch ends and can activate abilities that benefit from breaking armor.
