Choy Lay Fut (also called Choy Li Fut or Cai Li Fo) is a fighting style used by Ermac and Liu Kang in Shaolin Monks. It combines the martial arts techniques from various northern and southern chinese martial arts. Choy Lay Fut is also an effective defensive style particularly when dealing with more than one attacker. Of course it does have its own uniqueness such as, twisting the upper torso to gain more power for hand and arm techniques. Another one calls for the practitioner to tilt their body at an angle towards the opponent in order to reduce the target area exposed to him, and gives the practitioner far better reach.

History

Choy Lay Fut is actually both northern chinese style and southern chinese style, as the elements of the style originated from both the southern parts of china and the northern parts. Choy Lay Fut was created by Chan Heung, who lived around somewhere between 1806 to 1875. As a boy he was taught by his uncle in the arts of shaolin kung fu, the same style they taught in the shaolin temples. But, when he grew into a teenager Chan decided he wanted learn from the monks who hid themselves within the shaolin mountains. Thus began his eleven year to improve his martial art, and on that journey he met three master who would be his teachers: Choy Fook, Li Yao Sen, and Chan Yeun Wu. Using what he learned from his three masters Chan Heung developed his own martial arts style naming it after his teachers.

Forms

There are so many different forms of Choy Lay Fut because its founder, Chan Heung, learned from three different masters who already knew many traditional chinese forms. Using what he learned from his masters Chan Heung then developed his own forms such as training and fighting forms, and forms for various students with different physical shapes and abilities.

Pratice Methods

To Go Horse Health

Step is a routine pratice in choy lay fut, done in eight major steps: Meridian Ma, Ma Siping, Po Ma, Stealing Horses, Wrapped Sima, Ride a Rabbit, or interspersed with hanging horse coherent transformation One kick and ride horses with screw back and hit the buck with the sound of breath and so on. This pratice method is not only for beginners but also for those who just wish to pratice. But, advanced footwork is required such as, quickly changing, in order achieve further stability.

Pull Punches

These are choy lay fut's punching exercises and are placed in three groups: single ( insert, hanging, throwing, eating, whip, twisting plug, etc.), dual ( hanging split, cut spread, thousand of words marked hit, to kick, etc.), and multi ( hanging gate support, attack through support, etc.). With enough pratice and understanding the power from the waist in order for the leg coordinate with waist and shoulders. Trained Choy Lay Fut characteristic are being able to perform strong and rapid hits, knowing moves to master each technique change to the way of both moral and method. These can be mixed with pull punch exercises and sandbag dummy exercises to exercise with the leg of hardness.

Samsung to Play

This is the beginning of training the trunk stakes pratice, and his split into three actions. The first action is Gordon, making the forearm come in contact with the foot with the fist down. The second action is Pick, where the foot makes conact and the fist is diagonally down. The third action is the Downward Kick, forearm flexes on contact while fist is down rotating left or right. These exercise help increase forearm strength, and ability to withstand hitting.

Take the Upper Arm

This pratice method needs two people in order to be performed. First one must place their palm down on the back of the bicep while holding the other arm up then, a soft palm strike on the tricep.

Rip-Rap Lock

This is arm and wrist exercises, consisting of throwing the arm on lunge, or during a straight step, sweep, lash, etc.

Rip-Rap Ear Card

With this the practioner can trace their own concrete system, the weight and size of the "card" is based on the degree of lunges for arm and wrist exercise. Since the cord for the ear card is longer than the lock thus it is easier to swing and making the wrist the focus for this exercise.

Rolling Stone Throwing Tam

This can be used instead of barbells, and its weight serves its intial purpose that is to roll along the arm. The stone starts at the upper arm and then, rolls down to the wrist then back to its upper arm position. The purpose of this exercise is for the student to develop their arm strength and hardness.

Grasping Sandbags

The concept for this exercise is to with one hand lift the sandbags while using the other hand to perform "tiger strikes" which, is followed by "horse" after the lift against the wrist. Then, the "tiger" step is repeated to pratice arm, wrist, and "claw" strength.

Style

Choy Lay Fut has unique set of ten hand techniques, this set is the core set of strikes goes through out the entire system Choy Lay Fut. The hand techniques are as followed: Chuen Na, Gwa, Sau, Chop, Pow, Kup, Biu, Ding, and Jing. These hand techniques are combined with coordination of both attack and defense, flexible footwork, unfolding natural movements, fist rushes, mixed forces, and proficiency in both legwork and jumping. Also there are eight additional techniques to be learned, and are as followed: Yin, Yang, Kong, Yau, Hui, Shi, Tou, and Lau.

Chuen

Also known as Kum, this element of Choy Lay Fut consists of threading and grabbing movements which, are called Chuen Na and Poon Kiu. For the threading movements practioner first threads through a block or goes along the arm from the chest to stop an incoming strike. For the grabbing movements the practioner blocks an incoming strike from outward to inward, much like an incurve strike, a method for blocking straight strikes. Poon Kiu also acts a circle, a defense mechanism for blocking an enemy's incoming strikes. Blocking with two hands is also a factor in this element, and also this element is closely related to the grabbing element.

Na

This element is grabbing or controlling something, and according to ancient sayings it also means pulling. One must wait for the right moment to grab an enemy's arm or throat after threading. Poon Kiu also has the pulling function, using an incurve motion to make the enemy lose their balance. Both ways of Na have turned it into a defensive to offensive, and once one has grabbed their enemy they can control their arm.

Gwa

The element of Gwa is almost like hanging something in the air, as one must raise their arm to a proper level then strike down with a back fist. The back fist strike, almost like a tank ramming through the enemy's defense, can break the arm of the opponent or strike the cheek directly. The back fist strike can be both offensive and defensive but, it should not be used without another strike to accompany it.

Sau

This is the sweeping strike element, also meaning rolling back the opponent. This element is made up of three different techniques; incurve sweeping strike, whip strike, and the kicking technique of the sweeping strike. The incurve sweeping strike is large arc motion attack moving from up to down (or right to left for a right arm attack) but, it is never used alone and is always followed Poon Kiu or Gwa Chui.

Chop

In the movements of a weapon this move looks like it is pounding and piercing, similiar to the staff and spear. Now, when chop is put together with Panther Fist it becomes straight as a knife. Chop's sharp attacks can pierce the force into the body directly, making this element a major style of straight attacks for Choy Li Fut. But, there are different variations of chop such as, Yang Chop, which is when the thumb is down, and Yin Chop when the thumb is down. Another one where the back palm faces the sky is called Flat Chop, and also Chan gerk is part of this element. Gwa Chui, So Chui, and Chop Chui make the major attack techniques in Choy Li Fut, and if one can combine chop with good use of the twisting of stances, waist, and shoulders they can increase their attack and do some serious damage to their opponent.

Pow

Pow is similiar to a fierce ocean wave crashing on to a boat, as the strike is done in arc shape with the fist or palm from down to up. When using this the front palm lifts up the enemy's arm while the back palm uses their driving force for a counterattack. The Solar Plexus and ribs are parts of the body that one should aim for, and the force is strong enough to "throw" a person.

Kup

The Stamping Strike, which is done with the palm or fist, is an overhead straight arm downward strike that goes in a diagonal direction. The Stamping Strike can be The Tiger Claw, The Hammer Strike, or just simply a fist. The most important motion of Kup is The Stamping Fist which, done by using the knuckles of a tight fist to strike vertically.

Biu

This is similiar to an arrow launching from a bow as your attack, power, strength, and stance all come out at the same time like an arrow. An martial arts saying says "Swiftness can overrun all fortifications", and all martial art movements are directly based on swiftness. The way of stepping forward, along with the tip of the foot on the ground, will look similiar to an arrow coming from a bow. The enemy will have a difficult time tracking your movement because of the flexible steps involved. In addition, combining The Yin/Yang Fore Knuckle Strike with stepping forward will be similiar to a bow launching an arrow.

Ding

This looks similiar to closing a shutter in order to prevent someone from entering the house but, it can also be described as throwing something out. The first step is to, after grabbing the opponent's forearm, control the distance between the pracitioner and the opponent. Then, using the other hand to strike your opponent, it can be palm strike or fist strike.

Jong

This basically uses a strike to perform two different actions, for example, using the outward/inward forearm strike to knock down the opponent's forearm while at the same time striking their cheek. This is the way of lin sil di da, using the energy from two mobile objects going against each other (one must be heavier than the other). bit sil yi da, the way of destroying the incoming with a strike of its own, is using the enemy's driving and moving quickly to strike the enemy.
