Classic Sub-Zero was a playable character in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Mortal Kombat Trilogy, initially believed to be the live representation of the deceased original Sub-Zero. His biography screen is almost identical to the younger Sub-Zero's in Mortal Kombat II; it states that, though believed killed in the first Mortal Kombat, he is thought to have returned to try and assassinate Shang Tsung.[1] However, his ending reveals that upon removing his mask that he is "a warrior who has long been missing from a previous Mortal Kombat, and one who will return in the fourth tournament."[2]

It is most likely that this character was just an excuse to use all the known ninja swaps, or that fans wanted to play as Sub-Zero in his ninja form. It should also be noted that many character endings in Mortal Kombat games do not occur as canon as the storyline progresses, so Classic Sub-Zero's ending may mean nothing at all. The Mortal Kombat: Armageddon: Prima Official Game Guide, released long after Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and the revelation that Noob Saibot is the original Sub-Zero. He was said to have helped in the destruction of Scorpion's village, and he personally killed Scorpion's family. In a later fight he brutally kills Scorpion, who, thirsty for revenge, comes back to Earth and kills Sub-Zero. Though it is unclear how, he returns as Noob Saibot
