Death Traps made their first appearance in Mortal Kombat: Deception, and appeared again in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. They are various hazards in certain stages that result in instant death for anyone unfortunate enough to be knocked into them. They showed similarities to Stage Fatalities of previous installments but could be invoked at any moment during a match, not just after defeating the opponent, making them the MK-equivalent of a ring-out.

If a character was in the close vicinity of a Death Trap, the other player could knock them into it, resulting in a grisly death sequence. Although they are called "Death Traps," matches with more than one round will continue even after a Death Trap is triggered.

The Death Traps were signed with a red line in front of them so player could see where they were.
