—Bi-Han to his brother in Mortal Kombat 1

This article is about Bi-Han, the series' first Sub-Zero that eventually became Noob Saibot. For other characters that used the Sub-Zero title, see Sub-Zero (disambiguation).

Bi-Han (Chinese: 壁寒)[1][2], once known as Noob Saibot and the Elder Sub-Zero, is a Lin Kuei assassin in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. As the Wraith Noob Saibot, he has been a recurring antagonist in the series, following others on the side of evil while serving as a major antagonist towards his younger brother and Hanzo Hasashi.

Bi-Han made his debut as one of the few original characters in the first Mortal Kombat game as the original Sub-Zero (Chinese: 絶対零度 Absolute Zero?), a mantle later passed down to his younger brother Kuai Liang after his death. He later reappears as the Elder Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat (2011).

Bi-Han made his debut as Noob Saibot in Mortal Kombat II as a secret character, a role he takes on in many games after before making his playable debut in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. However, the identity of Noob Saibot being Bi-Han was not established until Mortal Kombat: Deception. He reappears as Noob Saibot in Mortal Kombat (2011) and Mortal Kombat 11.

A new version of Bi-Han returns in Mortal Kombat 1 under the Sub-Zero mantle while serving as an antagonist in the game's Story Mode.

About Bi-Han

Before his death, Bi-Han was the original Sub-Zero, one of the most powerful and devout warriors of the Lin Kuei clan. While essentially neutral, he was a cold-blooded, vicious assassin whose soul had become corrupted from years of violence and remorseless killing.

At the end of the first Mortal Kombat tournament, Bi-Han was murdered by Scorpion in retaliation for his own death at the cryomancer's hands. He then descended to the fifth plane of the Netherrealm where he was resurrected by the necromancer sorcerer Quan Chi, who had earlier resurrected Scorpion as well. The evil within Bi-Han's soul was released by stripping him of pride, compassion, and everything else that made him human.

Eventually reborn in the Netherrealm, now as the shadow wraith Noob Saibot, he becomes the very incarnation of evil. He desires not only to remain in the Netherrealm, but to conquer and rule it. Although he has been seen in the service of evil warlords such as Shinnok and Shao Kahn, his ultimate allegiance is to himself.

In the new timeline, Bi-Han is the rightful successor to be Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei, of which he becomes. He is the older brother of Kuai Liang, this timeline's Scorpion, and the adoptive brother of Smoke. After becoming Grandmaster, Bi-Han grows tiresome of being at Liu Kang's side of defending Earthrealm, wishing to help lead it to glory instead. He later betrays his brothers to ally with Shang Tsung and General Shao in exchange for control of the Dragon Army, leading to Scorpion and Smoke leaving the Lin Kuei and starting that timeline's Shirai Ryu.

Appearance (as Sub-Zero)

In MK, as with Scorpion and Reptile, Sub-Zero appeared with the traditional palette swap look he and the other ninjas had.

In UMK3, Sub-Zero shares the same fighting stance as Scorpion and Ermac with a traditional palette swaps for both.

In MK1, Bi-Han returns as Sub-Zero once again in a new outfit with a silver and black mask.

Appearance (as Noob Saibot)

In MKII & UMK3, redesigns of the new ninja outfits along with a black appearance.

In MKTE, his look was based off of Scorpion's in Deadly Alliance. Later on a new design in MKD, with a new ninja outfit, where one is all human flesh, the other in black wraith appearance.

In MK 2011, Bi-Han as Sub-Zero & Noob Saibot gains a new ninja outfit almost resembling his look from MK Deception. Until later an updated version with a hoodie.

In MK11, Noob Saibot gets a new look along with a sickle as his signature weapon.

Combat Characteristics (as Sub-Zero)

Powers and Abilities

When he was still the Cryomancer Sub-Zero, Bi-Han possessed incredible control over the element of ice. He could easily deep freeze opponents with temperatures of -500° Fahrenheit [3] (which surpasses even absolute zero) to the point of them becoming brittle enough to shatter into pieces. He was able to flash-freeze opponents with a single touch and had the ability to freeze the air in a large area around him by concentrating all of his power into one destructive blast. His powers were similar, if not superior, to his younger brother's cryomancy. Like his brother, he could create ice weapons when taking the offensive (swords, daggers, spikes, orbs, etc.) and ice constructs when switching to a more defensive style (clones, traps, and armor).

Signature Moves

  • Freeze: Sub-Zero sends a ball of ice to freeze the opponent in place, setting them up for a free hit. In MK1, this is attack is called Ice Ball and takes significantly longer for Sub-Zero to summon the Ice Ball. This attack can miss ducking opponents. (MK, UMK3, MKT, MKM:SZ, MK1)
    • In MK1, enhancing the attack deals double the original damage and increases its hitbox, allowing it to hit ducking opponents. Additionally, it will destroy any incoming projectile, should it come in contact with one.
  • Lin Kuei Slide: Sub-Zero slides across the floor and knocks the opponent off their feet. In MK1, this attack is called Ice Slide, and has Sub-Zero knock the opponent off their feet, only to impale them in the stomach with an ice spear before slamming them on the ground. (MK, UMK3, MKT, MKM:SZ, MK1)
    • In MK1, enhancing the attack deals increased damage and has armor. Sub-Zero no longer impales the opponent, rather swaps sides with them after knocking them off their feet.
  • Ground Freeze: Sub-Zero freezes the floor and whoever steps on the circle of ice will temporarily slip all over the place, setting the opponent up for a free hit. (UMK3, MKT, MKM:SZ)
  • Ice Clone: Sub-Zero creates an ice statue of himself anywhere he chooses, and anyone who touches it will freeze. In MK Trilogy, Bi-Han was given this attack only in the Nintendo 64 version. In MK1, this attack is called Ice Klone and disintegrates shortly after creating it, unlike the other versions of the attack. Sub-Zero can also spawn a Klone in the air, called (Air) Ice Klone, respectively. (MKT, MKM:SZ, MK1)
    • In MK1, enhancing the attack makes the Klone last longer. Additionally, Sub-Zero can enhance the attack right after creating the Klone, which creates two additional Klones in the air. If the opponent makes contact with the Klone, they will be propelled into the remaining Klones, with the last one freezing the opponent and setting them up for a free hit. Like the original, the attack can be performed in the air.
  • Ice Shower: Sub-Zero shoots ice straight overhead which falls back down atop his opponent. He can shoot it close, mid way, or far away to freeze the opponent. Bi-Han had this move only in the Nintendo 64 version of MK Trilogy. (MKT)
  • Freeze in the Air: Sub-Zero sends a ball of ice straight ahead whilist airborne. (MKM:SZ)
  • Diagonal Freeze: Sub-Zero shoots an ice blast upwards to freeze an airborne opponent. (MKM:SZ)
  • Freeze on Contact: Sub-Zero runs forward, and freezes enemies he touches on the way past. (MKM:SZ)
  • Super Lin Kuei Slide: Improved version of Lin Kuei Slide where Sub-Zero slides a greater distance. (MKM:SZ)
  • Deep Freeze: Sub-Zero freezes opponents to the point of them becoming brittle enough to shatter into pieces. (MKM:SZ)
  • Polar Blast: Sub-Zero freezes the air itself by concentrating all of his ice power into one destructive blast. (MKM:SZ)
  • Ice Klone Charge: Sub-Zero creates an Ice Klone that charges at the opponent with a straight punch, knocking them away. Additionally, it will destroy any incoming projectile, should it come in contact with one. (MK1)
    • Enhancing the attack deals increased damage while retaining the original properties.
  • (Air) Diving Glacier: While in the air, Sub-Zero dives at the opponent with his legs frozen and kicks them in the face, similar to Kung Lao's Dive Kick. Sub-Zero is able to continue combos if this is successful. (MK1)
    • Enhancing the attack has Sub-Zero slam his fist on the ground, creating ice stalagmites in the ground and launching the opponent into the air for a juggle. The attack deals no additional damage at the expense of the juggle effect.
  • Deadly Vapors: Sub-Zero summons ice at the opponent's feet, briefly slowing them before the ice melts. This attack tracks the opponent's location. (MK1)
    • Enhancing the attack traps the opponent in the ice much longer, dealing double the original damage and setting them up for a free hit.

X-Ray/Fatal Blow

  • Kameo Fatal Blow: Sub-Zero in his klassic appearance slides towards the opponent, impaling them in both sides of their head with small icicles before pulling them in and shattering the front of their skull with a vicious headbutt. (MK1 - Kameo Ability)
  • Fatal Blow - Chill Out: Sub-Zero slides towards his opponent and creates a row of large icicles that impale the opponent, with one of them going through their mouth and severing several vertebrae. He then jumps in the air with a Frost Hammer and slams it over the opponent's restricted body, knocking them to the ground. (MK1)

Other Moves

  • Negative Zero (Backward Throw): Sub-Zero grabs the opponent, freezes them in place then jumps over them, creating a skull and spinal column made of ice and knocks them away in the opposite direction. (MK1)
  • Unhappy Feet (Kameo Forward Throw): Sub-Zero is called in to freeze the opponent's feet before jumping up and kicking them in the face, knocking them away. (MK1 - Kameo Ability)
  • Arctic Armor: Sub-Zero is called in to freeze his ally's upper body, granting them immunity to the next five projectiles for some time. Sustaining damage ends this effect prematurely. This is an Ambush Attack, allowing it to be used at any moment with the exception of being comboed.
  • Kold Shoulder: Sub-Zero is called in to shoulder charge at the opponent with icicles on his shoulders, knocking them away nearly full-screen distance. This attack is borrowed from his younger brother from a different timeline. When blocked by the opponent, this attack creates massive pushback. This attack can be performed after performing Arctic Armor, turning it into an Ambush Attack at the expense of Sub-Zero remaining Kameo Meter. (MK1 - Kameo Ability)
  • Iced Out: Sub-Zero is called on to create a burst of ice from his body, freezing the opponent and setting them up for a free hit. (MK1 - Kameo Ability)

Fatalities

As Sub-Zero

  • Spine Rip: Sub-Zero rips out his opponent's head and spinal cord from their shoulders. This was one of the most infamous Fatalities in the first MK, along with Kano's Heart Rip Fatality, which later spun a web of controversy around the violence factor in the game. This Fatality was later given to his younger brother in future games, and to Scorpion in Deception. In Trilogy and UMK3, the screen blacks out before Sub-Zero separates the spine, poking fun at the controversy that first surrounded the Fatality. It was also later used as a finisher in Armageddon. This Fatality is also credited for influencing the creation and introduction of the ESRB games rating system due to its graphic nature. In MK1, Sub-Zero freezes the neck before ripping the head off. (MK, UMK3, MKT, MKM:SZ, MK1)
  • Ice Shatter: In the SNES version of Mortal Kombat, Sub-Zero jumps away from the opponent and freezes them, then jumps back in front of the opponent and backhands them, shattering them to pieces. (MK)
  • Sliding Knockout: In the Game Boy version of Mortal Kombat, Sub-Zero slides across the screen and knocks out the opponent. (MK)
  • Super Uppercut: In the Sega Genesis version of Mortal Kombat, Sub-Zero delivers a powerful uppercut that knocks out the opponent. This Fatality works only if Blood Mode is off. (MK)
  • Ice Stalagmite: Sub-Zero uppercuts his opponent, and immediately freezes the ground to form an ice stalagmite as the opponent falls and is impaled on it. (MKT)
  • Hairline Fracture: Sub-Zero creates a large icicle blade and throws it at the opponent, horizontally cutting through their midsection. He then kicks the top half of the opponent, turning it 180 degrees. The icicle blade comes back like a boomerang and lodges itself into the top of the opponent's skull. Blood gushes everywhere before the opponent falls down. The fall is halted by the icicle as it gets stuck in the ground. The opponent coughs up blood before slowly sliding down the icicle, then the lower half proceeds to fall to the ground. (MK1)
  • Brain Freeze: Sub-Zero conjures an ice wall behind the opponent as they turn around, grabs the back of their head and smashes their face against the wall several times, the second time peeling off the skin from the opponent's face, the next one crushing the front part of their skull and leaving the brain stuck to the ice before freezing what's left of the head and smashing it against the wall, destroying both as the body slumps down. (MK1)

Brutalities

Mortal Kombat 1

  • The Klassic: Sub-Zero performs his uppercut, decapitating the opponent with a rising palm strike coated in an icicle.
  • Absolute Zero: Sub-Zero performs an Ice Slide, impaling the opponent several times in the stomach after knocking them ground before impaling them through the mouth and ripping off their head with his ice spear.
  • Snowball: Sub-Zero performs either a regular or enhances Ice Ball on an opponent full-screen distance. After freezing them, he creates a snowball and throws it at them, shattering their upper body to pieces.
  • Karbon Kopy: Sub-Zero performs an Ice Klone Charge that severs the opponent's upper body at the waist.
  • Krushed Ice: Sub-Zero performs his Whiteout combo, shattering the opponent to pieces with his make-shift ice skull mace.
  • Ability To Freeze: Sub-Zero performs either a regular or enhanced Deadly Vapors that freezes then disintegrates the opponent's lower body.
  • Frost Bite: Sub-Zero is called in to perform his Kameo Forward Throw, freezing the opponent in place then performs an Ice Slide that destroys the opponent's shins. As they scream in agony, Sub-Zero approaches and hold them up while performing his Victory Pose as he freezes them to death. (Kameo Brutality)
  • Big Leg: Sub-Zero is called in to perform Iced Out freezing his opponent while posing in victory as his Main Fighter shatters the opponent with a powerful kick.

Other Finishers

  • Friendship: Sub-Zero winds up a box which makes a giant snowman head pop out of it, scaring off his opponent. (MKT)
  • Animality: Sub-Zero turns into a polar bear and mauls his opponent. (MKT, N64 only)

Combat Characteristics (as Noob Saibot)

Powers and Abilities

His transformation to the wraith Noob Saibot did not immediately grant him new abilities; his first appearance in Mortal Kombat II had him borrow moves from other ninjas. It wouldn't be until Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 that Noob fully came into his own, harnessing the powers of darkness and shadow against his foes.

Noob displays a mastery over the powers of darkness and is able to turn invisible, create weapon constructs, and summon a shadow clone of himself to assist in battle. This allows him to overwhelm opponents who fight on their own. His clone was replaced by Cyber Smoke in Mortal Kombat: Deception, who had a similar role in combat but had his own set of powers and could summon Noob when needed. In the latest installment, he can duplicate and teleport to his shadow clone for an advantage in numbers and mobility respectively. The clone can also be summoned inside live opponents to bypass external defenses by pouring dark energy into them, tearing them apart from the inside.

Like most ninjas, Noob has the ability to teleport. In older games, his teleportation required the use of dark portals which he could also use on unlucky opponents who were caught in them. His usage of teleportation and portals was expanded on in Mortal Kombat (2011) and in Mortal Kombat 11. He could turn into liquid and reform elsewhere, use portals to reposition himself or his opponent, and even kill by crushing and disintegrating those who are caught in his portal. Noob honed his bunshin techniques as well; summoning multiple clones to restrain enemies. He used such techniques upon Jax and Jacqui when they returned to Shang Tsung's Island to retrieve the crown.

His weapons of choice are shurikens. He initially was to have these weapons, along with a scythe, in Mortal Kombat 4, but was replaced with Reiko. However, he begins using such weapons in Mortal Kombat: Deception. He also utilizes a sickle as his main weapon in Mortal Kombat 11.

In his current form as a Wraith, Noob possesses a degree of immortality. This was demonstrated when he survived being thrown into the Soulnado by Nightwolf. Noob was able to withstand the vortex and absorb the souls swirling around it, using them to fuel his power. In addition, the sickle he wields is lodged into his heart, but he appears to be unaffected as the weapon is frequently sheathed and unsheathed.

Signature Moves

  • Hidden Claw: Noob shoots out a spear on a rope at his opponent, dragging them over to him, allowing a free hit. This move is directly borrowed from Scorpion. In Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition, Noob will laugh evilly then exclaim, "Get over here!" (MKII, MK:TE)
  • Confusing Teleport: Noob teleports to the other side of the screen and punches his opponent from behind. (MKII)
  • Slide Tackle: Noob does a scissor kick to his opponent. (MKII)
  • Air Throw: While in the air, Noob grabs the opponent and throws them. (MKII, MK4, MKG)
  • Disabler: Noob sends out a ghostly fireball which disables the opponent's special moves and blocks. This attack was renamed Ghost Ball in MK 2011 and Ghostball in MK11. In MK11, this projectile is unblockable, and Noob performs a long wind-up before launching it. If it connects, it will temporarily remove a bar from the opponent's Offensive and Defensive meters. This ability conflicts with Spirit Ball when equipped, disabling the option to select Spirit Ball. (UMK3, MKT, MK4, MKG, MK 2011, MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • The enhanced version is called Spirit Ball. It will confuse the opponent and deal more damage.
  • Teleport Slam: Disappearing, then reappearing behind his opponent, he grabs them and slams them on the ground. The attack is called Teleport Grab in Armageddon. In MK11, this attack is called Tele-Slam and Noob hooks the opponent with his sickle and throws them to the ground. (UMK3, MKT, MK4, MKG, MK:A, MK 2011, MK11)
    • The enhanced version is called Teleport Smash and has Noob drag the opponent through the ground two additional times via portal.
    • In MK11, the move can be amplified with different results if an Equip Ability is selected or if the ability is unaltered;
      • Amplifying the attack has Noob travel through three portals, dealing damage with each passage before slamming the opponent on the ground to deal increased damage.
      • Equipping (Air) Tele-Slam allows Noob to perform Tele-Slam while in the air, retaining its amplified properties. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
        • Equipping Shadow Portals alters the amplified version of the move, where Noob throws the opponent through three portals rather than traveling with them; they bounce off the ground for a juggle once they exit the final portal. This amplified version deals less damage than the original and deals little to no extra damage as compared to a regular Tele-Slam at the expense of granting the juggle effect. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
  • Shadow Throw: Noob sends out a shadowy construct that grabs and throws his opponent into the air. (UMK3, MKT)
  • Teleport Attacks: Similar to the Teleport Slam, only he attacks the opponent instead of slamming them. (MK4, MKG)
  • Fireball: Noob shoots a pink fireball at the opponent, this can also be done in the air. (MK4, MKG)
  • Blue Fireball: Noob sends out a bluish-white fireball at his opponent. (MK:TE)
  • We Live: Along with Smoke, the two charge and punch the opponent. (MK:D, MK:U)
  • Death from Above: Noob Saibot summons Smoke from the air, who then appears and kicks the opponent in the face. (MK:D, MK:U)
  • Dark Shadows: Noob Saibot summons Smoke, who appears and punches the opponent from behind. (MK:D, MK:U)
  • Dark Assassin: Summoned by Smoke, he tosses shuriken at the opponent. In Armageddon, Noob performs this move without a partner. Noob unleashes 4 shuriken in one throw, unlike Reiko, who throws them one by one. (MK:D, MK:U, MK:A)
  • Darkness: Noob Saibot vanishes and reappears at will. (MK:D, MK:U, MK:A)
  • Black Hole: Noob Saibot shoots a dark portal into the air which lands on the ground behind the enemy. It can also appear in front or landing right on the enemy. Should the enemy fall or be knocked into the portal, they will fall from the sky directly above Noob and receive damage from the drop. (MK:A, MK 2011)
    • The enhanced versions are all called Darkness. The black hole will fall faster and will drop the opponent head first into the ground.
  • Shadow Slide: In a nod to his Lin Kuei Slide before his transformation, Noob sends his Shadow Clone out in a slide, which trips the opponent. In MK11, this attack is considered a projectile. In MK11, this ability conflicts with Shadow Strike when equipped, disabling the option to select Shadow Strike. (MK 2011, MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • The enhanced version is called Saibot Slide and makes the opponent completely flip over the shadow onto their back.
    • In MK11, amplifying the move has the Shadow Clone follow up with a Rising Shadow Kick, dealing increased damage and launching the opponent in the air. When used in the corner of an arena, the amplified version can offer additional combo extensions; otherwise, the opponent is knocked away when launched in the air.
  • Shadow Charge: Noob Saibot sends his Shadow Clone to tackle his foe. In MK11, this attack is called Shadow Tackle. This attack is considered a projectile. (MK 2011, MK11)
    • The enhanced version is called Saibot Charge and will have the Shadow Clone punch the opponent in the face before disintegrating.
    • In MK11, amplifying the move has the Clone stab the opponent with a sickle before disintegrating.
      • If Noob successfully connects ten Shadow Clone special attacks during the match, the attack can turn into a Krushing Blow on its next usage after when amplified again, with the sickle stab being dug significantly deeper, dealing over double the original damage.
  • Shadow Upknee: Noob Saibot launches his Shadow Clone in the air, which kicks the opponent away from him or can be used to strike airborne opponents. In MK11, this attack is called Rising Shadow Kick. Also in MK11, when used in the corner of an arena on an airborne opponent, it can either continue or offer extended combos if it successfully hits. In some instances, it can also be used on a standing opponent to launch them in the air for a juggle, otherwise the attack simply knocks the opponent away. This attack is considered a projectile. (MK 2011, MK11)
    • The enhanced version is called Saibot Upknee. It is slightly more damaging and sends the opponent further back.
  • Shadow Dive: While in the air, Noob Saibot sends his Shadow Clone in a downward angle to perform a diving kick to damage the opponent. This attack is considered a projectile. This ability conflicts with Sickle Port when equipped, disabling the option to select Sickle Port. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
  • Shadow Strike: Noob Saibot sends his Shadow Clone to perform a low kick at a close range, tripping up the opponent. Unlike his other Shadow Clone attacks, this attack is not considered a projectile. This ability conflicts with Shadow Slide when equipped, disabling the option to select Shadow Slide. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
  • Spirit Ball: Noob Saibot sends out a fast moving Ghostball that lacks its meter removing properties. This ability conflicts with Ghostball when equipped, disabling the option to select Ghostball. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
  • Sickle Snag: Noob Saibot stabs his opponent in the air with his sickle, only for his Shadow Clone to slam them onto the ground and give Noob his sickle back. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Amplifying the attack has the Shadow Clone bounce the opponent off the ground instead of slamming them, allowing for extended combos. The attack can only be amplified once for the juggle effect. The amplified version deals less damage at the cost of granting the juggle effect.
  • (Air) Sickle Port: While in the air, Noob Saibot throws his sickle down at an angle and teleports to the place it lands on the ground. This ability conflicts with Shadow Dive when equipped, disabling the option to select Shadow Dive. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Amplifying the attack has Noob perform an uppercut that deals damage and launches the opponent in the air for a juggle if Noob Saibot is near them when he teleports.
  • Sickle Toss: Noob Saibot tosses his sickle up in the air where his Shadow Clone comes down and slams it over the opponent's head bouncing them and knocking them away. The attack can be used at different ranges, called Close/Far Sickle Toss. This attack is not considered a projectile. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
    • Amplifying the attack has the Clone perform an uppercut, knocking the opponent into the air for a juggle after bouncing them.

X-Ray/Fatal Blow

  • X-Ray - Together Again: Noob Saibot first calls his Shadow to appear from behind his opponent and grab them. Noob then punches the foe in the face, breaking the whole skull, the Shadow then breaks their spine, heart, and ribs by kneeing them in the lower back. Noob then kicks the opponent in the stomach, causing them to vomit on his leg. (MK 2011)
  • Fatal Blow - Together Again: Noob Saibot traps the opponent's legs through a portal. His Shadow Clone charges them from behind, leading to him performing a dropkick on their head. Then his shadow clone smashes the opponent to the ground, leading to Noob stomping on the back of their skull. He then shoves the blade of his sickle through the opponent's chin and skull. (MK11)

Other Moves

  • Spear: Sending out a rope with a tipped Kunai at the end, it impales itself into the victim's chest, allowing Noob to pull him or her through the air towards him for a free hit, as well as cause a small bit of damage. This ability is borrowed from Scorpion. (MKII)
  • Cannon Ball: Noob curls into a ball and flies at his opponent. This ability is borrowed from Kano. (MK3)
  • Throw: Noob Saibot grabs his foe, proceeds to roll backwards, brings up a leg as in a monkey flip and launches the foe halfway across the arena. He then does a kip-up. Almost all male ninjas share this throw pre-MK4. (MKII, UMK3, MKT)
  • Throw: Noob Saibot grabs his opponent by the shoulders, then summons his shadow twin from behind. The shadow twin pulls the opponent into the ground and pummels them off the screen while Noob laughs evilly. The opponent is then teleported back onto the screen. (MK 2011)
  • Throw (Forward): Noob Saibot uppercuts the opponent into a portal who flies out of a portal on the ground in front of Noob, who uppercuts them again, sending them through the portal again and finally kicks them away. (MK11)
    • If Noob performs this on an opponent who has failed a Throw Escape during a previous Throw before, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, where when Noob kicks the opponent in the gut, it damages their internal organs, dealing over double the original damage. If this is successful, Noob Saibot cannot perform the Krushing Blow version of his Throw (Backward).
  • Throw (Backward): Noob Saibot hoists the opponent into a portal who then is held by his Shadow Clone above him by their feet, allowing him to punch them twice and slamming them down. (MK11)
    • If Noob performs this on an opponent who has failed a Throw Escape during a previous Throw before, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, where when Noob slams the opponent into the ground, it shatters the entire top of the opponent's skull, dealing over double the original damage. If this is successful, Noob Saibot cannot perform the Krushing Blow version of his Throw (Forward).
  • Dark Push: Noob thrusts his shadow energy-wreathed palms forward, knocking the opponent away. This attack has armor breaking properties, ignoring the armor granted by specific abilities and Fatal Blows. When breaking armor this way, the opponent is knocked into the air rather than away. Additionally, Noob can perform special attacks or use interactables after breaking the opponent's armor this way. When using the attack on an opponent in the corner of an arena and breaking the armor of a Break Away, Noob Saibot can continue combos should he break the armor this way without needing to cancel into a special attack, however this window is extremely small. (MK11)
  • Wailing Wraith: Noob performs a fast, spinning backhanded chop, summons his Clone to do the same attack, then does a powerful palm strike to the opponent's chest, knocking them into the air before his Shadow Clone grabs his sickle, slashes and knocks the opponent away with a final slash. Noob will then teleport to his Clone, and his Clone disappears, advancing towards his opponent. Noob Saibot travels a considerable distance across the arena when performing the combo, however, he never summons his Clone if the combo is blocked by the opponent or if the entire combo misses. Due to this, he will not advance the maximum distance the combo allows. (MK11)
  • Sinister Silhouette: Noob sends out his Shadow Clone to slash at the opponent's shins with the sickle, hooks them with the sickle under their chin and tosses them to the ground in the opposite direction. (MK11)
    • If the opponent is blocking high when the first strike hits, the combo turns into a Krushing Blow, where when Noob slams the opponent, he shatters their ribs, dealing increased damage, and bounces the opponent off the ground for a juggle.
  • As One: Noob's Shadow Clone jabs the opponent's midsection before lunging forward, stabbing the opponent in the stomach with Noob's sickle, pulling them forward. This attack has a follow-up attack but can also be canceled into special attacks. Additionally, this combo re-stands the opponent. (MK11)
    • For the Brotherhood: After pulling the opponent in, Noob Saibot punches the opponent in the face with so much force, he knocks them halfway across the arena.
      • If this combo and its follow-up attack are performed on the opponent as a Kounter or a Punish, the combo turns into a Krushing Blow, with the punch to the face crushing the upper half of the opponent's skull inward and dealing over double the original damage. The knockback effect remains the same.

Fatalities

  • Teleport Slams: Noob performs his special move of teleporting and slamming the opponent into the ground, repeatedly, until the victim explodes. Rarely, on the N64 version, it was possible for CPU opponents to perform this Fatality without winning, resulting in a game freeze. (MKT)
  • Shadow Spin: Noob lifts his arm to summon a spinning cloud identical to the one that surrounds an opponent affected by his attack-disabling projectile. It drops onto the opponent, lifts them into the air, then spins until the victim's bones fly out of the spinning tornado. (MKT)
  • Torso Rip: Noob grabs his opponent around the torso and rips it off, he then throws it to the ground. This Fatality is borrowed from Johnny Cage. (MK4)
  • Torso Kick: A secret Fatality, it only occurs if the one-button Fatalities cheat is enabled. This Fatality is borrowed from Reiko, Noob Saibot's would-be replacement in MK4 and MKG; Noob delivers a mighty kick to the opponent's torso, separating it from their head, arms, and legs. (MK4, MKG)
  • Ice Shatter: Another secret Fatality, this one is copied from Sub-Zero; Noob Saibot freezes the opponent whole and shatters them with an uppercut. This one is quite the foreshadowing, considering Noob Saibot's then-unrevealed origins. (MKG)
  • Shuriken Barrage: Another secret Fatality, this one copied from Reiko, where he tosses many shurikens at the opponent rapidly. In Deception, Noob takes out a deck of shuriken and throws a few of them at the opponent's body, before unloading all of the remaining shurikens on his hand over their torso and head, causing the victim to collapse to the ground, dead, afterward. (MK4, MK:D, MK:U)
  • Make a Wish: Noob summons his Shadow Clone and they each grab one of the opponent's legs. They then start pulling until the opponent is completely ripped in half. They then strike a victorious pose, each holding up their half of the victim. (MK 2011)
  • As One: Noob creates a portal below the opponent, and his Shadow Clone comes out and grabs their torso. When the opponent's legs are through the portal, Noob closes it, crushing the midsection, and leaving the victim crawling on the floor to bleed to death. (MK 2011)
  • Split Decision: Noob grabs his sickle, then uses his powers to create two separate sickles in each hand. He then opens two portals behind the opponent, piercing their torso, where two more portals open immediately after, with his Shadow Clone now reaching through with his own pair of sickles, piercing the opponent's thighs. Noob then pulls forward, crossing his sickles, ripping the opponent's torso in half while his Shadow Clone tears their lower body in half and ripping off their legs as the opponent's body pieces fly in different directions. (MK11)
  • Double Trouble: Noob grabs his sickle and eviscerates the opponent's stomach, causing their intestines to fall out. He then jams his hand into the opponent wound, flooding it with dark energy. As dark energy begins to seep from the opponent's eyes and mouth, his Shadow Clone begins tearing the opponent in half, coming out of their mouth before ripping them in half from the face to the midsection. (MK11)

Brutalities

Mortal Kombat 11

  • The Klassic: Noob performs his uppercut, decapitating the opponent with a rising sickle swing with their spine still attached.
  • Decapper: Noob performs his Throw (Backward), only this time, he decapitates the opponent with his sickle immediately after his Shadow Clone suspends them upside down, leaving their corpse dangling upside down.
  • Skinned: Noob performs his Throw (Forward), with each kick into each portal removing the layers of the opponent's skin before their skeleton vanishes into a final portal with the final kick.
  • Wow Out: Noob performs an amplified Tele-Slam with Shadow Portals equipped and leaves the portals open, causing the opponent to helplessly fall in an infinite loop.
  • Hooked: Noob performs a Sickle Toss, where his Shadow Clone cuts the opponent in half vertically from the head down upon landing.
  • More Portals More Problems: Noob performs a Sickle Snag, only this time when he slams the opponent on the ground, he opens a portal beneath them where his Shadow Clone quickly grabs the opponent, drags them in, only for Noob to close the portal, bisecting the opponent at the waist with their intestines falling out. The opponent attempts to crawl away, only to bleed to death as Noob Saibot performs his Brutality Victory Pose.
  • The Darkness: Noob performs his As One combo, only this time when his Shadow Clone pulls the opponent in, the opponent holds onto their stomach as Noob performs his Brutality Victory Pose. After a moment, their stomach is cut open when they remove their arm, revealing that the Shadow Clone eviscerated them when pulling them in, where they fall over and die as a result.
  • Good To Be Back: Noob performs either a Rising Shadow Kick or an amplified Shadow Slide, with the rising Shadow Clone kick causing the opponent to explode completely on impact.
  • Never Again: Noob performs a Ghostball that causes the opponent to float and shrink, their mass compressing until they are squished into a bloody pulp.
  • Running Man: Noob performs a Shadow Tackle, only this time, instead of the Clone tackling the opponent, the Clone vanishes when it touches the opponent, where the opponent begins to twitch and clutches their chest, only for the Clone to reappear in their place, causing them to completely explode before the Clone itself vanishes.
  • From The Shadows: Noob performs his Throw (Forward), only this time instead of kicking the opponent away, he throws them towards the screen, causing them to explode on impact.

Other Finishers

  • Friendship #1 - Spare Me: Noob Saibot goes bowling, and ends up getting a split. Shao Kahn then says "That was pathetic." (MKT)
  • Friendship #2 - Me And My Shadow: Noob Saibot summons two Shadow Clones to play jump rope. He also adds some dance moves while jumping. (MK11)
  • Animality - Crazy Ant-ics: Noob turns into an anteater and swallows the opponent whole. (MKT)
  • Hara-Kiri - Shuriken Headshots: Having taken to using shurikens in this game, Noob Saibot simply throws them upwards and lets them fall back down on his head. (MK:D, MK:U)
  • Babality: Noob Saibot summons a portal, but gets sucked up, and ends up summoning a portal below himself as well. Noob Saibot is then caught in an infinite loop where he keeps falling through both portals in a comical fashion. (MK 2011)

Appearances in Other Media (Sub-Zero)

Mortal Kombat (1995 film)

Bi-Han appears in the 1995 film Mortal Kombat as Sub-Zero, portrayed by François Petit. His relationship with Scorpion is all but ignored; Shang Tsung only remarks that they are the "deadliest of enemies, but slaves under my power."

Together with Scorpion, Sub-Zero was one of Shang Tsung's guardians who confronted Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade on Shang Tsung's boat. When the two prepared to fight the trio, they were incapacitated by Lord Raiden. Later, during the dinner on the eve of the tournament, Sub-Zero participated in a demonstration fight for the Earthrealm warriors, killing his opponent by freezing and shattering him.

During the tournament, Sub-Zero fought Liu Kang. When Liu Kang gained the upper hand, Sub-Zero used his freezing abilities to create a force field in an attempt to draw Liu Kang to his death. However, this backfired — Liu Kang threw a nearby wooden bucket filled with water (placed there by Raiden earlier to aid Kang) towards the force field, creating an icicle that impaled and subsequently froze the cryomancer.

In Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins, the unofficial tie-in and prequel to the 1995 film, the original Sub-Zero, was again depicted as a servant of Shang Tsung alongside Scorpion, and the two were forced by the sorcerer to team up in order to kill Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade. Engaging the trio in combat, they were stopped from killing them by Raiden. The rivalry between Sub-Zero and Scorpion is explored during the course of the film, although interpreted differently from that of the games.

Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm

The original Sub-Zero appears briefly in the first episode of Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, in a flashback which shows him being defeated by Liu Kang like in the 1995 film. However, because the show was aimed at a younger audience, instead of getting impaled by an ice stalagmite-like in the film, Sub-Zero froze himself instead.

Mortal Kombat (1995 novel)

In the novel Mortal Kombat by Jeff Rovin, the original Sub-Zero is a man even more brutal in comparison to his videogame counterpart. After he killed Yong Park by disemboweling him in front of his family and throwing his corpse into a river, he went into seclusion. He then received a message from Shang Tsung, who enlisted him to kill the man working for the Order of Light, Liu Kang. After donning his costume, he went after Liu Kang somewhere close to a temple. He killed two of Liu Kang's friends and proceeded to battle him. He almost won, but Liu Kang awoke his fire powers and forced him to flee. Later, while Raiden and Liu Kang battle Goro and Reptile, Sub-Zero caught them off guard and froze them. When he was preparing to kill them, Yong Park, resurrected by Yu via fusing himself with his son Tsui to become Scorpion, snatched them away and awoke them. They all battled, with Sub-Zero making a swift escape using a smoke bomb. Sub-Zero was then never seen again in the novel.

Mortal Kombat: Rebirth

Sub-Zero and his brother are mentioned in the short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, by Sonya Blade and Jax Briggs, in an attempt to gain Scorpion's trust, and get him to enter Shang Tsung's tournament as Sonya Blade told Hanzo Hasashi that if he joined the tournament, he would get the opportunity to kill Sub-Zero. Scorpion believed he was dead, but he was then informed that the one he had killed was the older brother.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy

Bi-Han appears as Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat Legacy, portrayed by Kevan Ohtsji in Season 1 and Eric Steinberg in Season 2. Unlike in the games, Bi-Han and Hanzo Hasashi were childhood friends and sparring rivals rather than bitter enemies; they would often train together in a hayfield outside of their respective villages. However, their fathers eventually discovered this arrangement and forbid the two boys from seeing each other. Bi-Han questioned his father as to why the Lin Kuei and the Shirai Ryu were in conflict, but the answers he gave implied he himself did not know the reason.

When Bi-Han succeeded his father as general, he forbade any violent conflict between them and the Shirai Ryu. This peace would be broken when an overambitious Kuai Liang challenged Hanzo and paid with his life. After this event, Bi-Han promised Hanzo there would be no retaliation for the death of his younger brother and the two committed to a formal truce to forever end the violence between their clans.

Tragedy struck shortly after, however, as news reached Bi-Han about the slaughter of the Shirai Ryu and Hanzo's family at the hands of the Lin Kuei. Bi-Han was shocked and heartbroken that his clan would defy him and commit such a horrendous act, but before he could punish those involved, a mystic arrived and revealed the truth behind the attack. The sorcerer Quan Chi had impersonated Sub-Zero to carry out the slaughter so that he could resurrect Hanzo and gain his allegiance in the upcoming Mortal Kombat tournament. In the vision produced by the mystic, Quan Chi (appearing as Bi-Han) is seen killing the land's shogun and murdering Hanzo as he finds his family's frozen remains.

Bi-Han travelled to the tournament to track down Hanzo and explain to him the true nature of his death. However, Hanzo had been resurrected as the spectre Scorpion and was far too consumed by his vengeance to listen. Though Sub-Zero put up a valiant fight, he ultimately lost when Scorpion impaled him from behind with his kunai. Scorpion completed his revenge by ripping out his rival's head and spinal cord, killing him instantly.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge

Bi-Han, voiced by Steven Blum, appears as Sub-Zero in the 2020 animated film Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge. Like most of his counterparts in other media, Scorpion tried to kill Sub-Zero for the deaths of his family and the clan of Shirai Ryu.

Sub-Zero attended the Mortal Kombat Tournament. In the wake of Earthrealm's success, Shang Tsung ordered the Black Dragon to kill them. Upon reaching the bridge that leads to the throne room, the Earthrealmers were ambushed by Kano and Black Dragon assassins. With the help of Scorpion, they managed to defeat the Black Dragon. Kano was intercepted and overpowered by Sub-Zero, who helped the group deal with the Black Dragon assassins. However, Scorpion, recognizing the blue-clad ninja as his son's killer, started to battle him in an act of vengeance. The fight ended with Sub-Zero's death and Quan Chi showed up in front of Scorpion to reveal that he was the one who massacred the clan of Shirai Ryu.

Mortal Kombat (2021 film)

Main: Bi-Han/Film

Bi-Han appears as Sub-Zero in the 2021 film Mortal Kombat and is portrayed by actor Joe Taslim.

Appearances in Other Media (Noob Saibot)

As Noob Saibot's onscreen appearances by far all predate Mortal Kombat: Deception, the game established Noob Saibot as original Sub-Zero, all of these counterparts' origins do not reference to his origin as Sub-Zero.

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation

In Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, the sequel to the 1995 film, Noob Saibot, portrayed by J.J. Perry, makes a brief appearance by emerging from Ermac's chest to assist him in his fight with Sonya Blade. Almost successful in killing her, they were stopped by Jax Briggs, who quickly defeated Noob Saibot while Sonya finished Ermac.

Mortal Kombat: Conquest

Noob Saibot, played by Master Sultan Uddin, makes an appearance in Mortal Kombat: Conquest as an Outworld ninja warrior banished by Shao Kahn in the eponymous episode.

Noob Saibot was an Outworld warrior banished by Shao Kahn and imprisoned inside a "mystical shrine in the darkest depths" in Zhu Zin.

Siro, frustrated by a fight in a bazaar when he was attacked by a group of thugs, was deceived by Kiri, a "seer" as claimed by Ankha, who told him to defeat two powerful warriors in a "mystical shrine in the darkest depths" so he would gain the power from them. Siro insisted on going to the shrine despite Taja's doubt and opposition.

Insides the shrine, Siro found there were only oil stains scattered around and two ceremonial warrior statues in the crypt. Taja lost her patience and left Siro alone in the room. However, the ceremonial warriors came to life and fought Siro. During the fight, Siro was nearly overpowered, but he was saved by Taja, who killed the two warriors. Unknown to Siro, when he fell on the ground, his clothes was stained by the oil. That night, the stain on his clothes came to life and moved to Kira's place. It was revealed the living oil was in fact Noob Saibot, who used to serve Kira.

As he could be killed by Shao Kahn if he dared to return to his realm, Kira told Noob Saibot to kill the Great Kung Lao, so he would earn the Emperor's favour and return as a hero. Noob Saibot agreed to kill Kung Lao and went to the Trading Post to taunt the Monk.

Upon knowing what Noob Saibot was as he found the ninja left a trace of oil, Siro went to Kira's place with anger. There, Siro noticed that the oil covering Noob Saibot was flammable.

However, Taja thought Siro went to the shrine, so she and Kung Lao headed there, only to be confronted by Noob Saibot. The two fought, but Noob Saibot was gaining upper hands and even used a short stick to attack Kung Lao. Siro managed to interfere the fight and save Kung Lao by setting the oil ninja on fire, causing him to explode after the trio escaped.

In the Trading Post during the night, Raiden told the trio that Noob Saibot was a ninja with amazing powers but banished by Shao Kahn. Even Raiden did not know Noob Saibot was in Earthrealm and he was doubt if the ninja was dead.

Later, the living oil emerged again and possibly left the shrine.

Trivia (as Sub-Zero)

General

  • Bi-Han's name can be transcribed into Chinese 壁漢, literally "flat-jade man", or 避寒, "escape cold".
  • Sub-Zero's original name was going to be "Tundra", which canonically became the younger Sub-Zero's original codename.
  • During his time as Sub-Zero, he disliked being called a "ninja". As a Lin Kuei loyalist, he referred to himself as a "Lin Kuei warrior" and distinguished the difference between the two.
    • Ironically, Noob uses Shurikens, which are commonly used by ninjas. Furthering the irony, shurikens in the series were first used in Mortal Kombat 4 by Reiko, who replaced Noob in the game.
    • Additionally in MK11, during an interaction with his brother Kuai Liang and Cassie Cage, Cassie refers to the Lin Kuei as ninjas, to which Sub-Zero retorts that they are not despite dressing like them.
  • In all games both brothers have appeared, Sub-Zero's Ice Blast and Noob's Disabler have had the same button combination (Down, Forward, Low Punch).
    • In MK 2011, however, Sub-Zero's ice ball uses a slightly different combination than Noob's ghost ball (Down, Forward, Front Kick and Down, Forward, Front Punch respectively). Also, Cyber Sub-Zero's Ice Ball uses the same combination as the Ghost Ball.

Mortal Kombat

  • Bi-Han debuts as the original Sub-Zero in this game as well as the first member of the Lin Kuei in the series.

Mortal Kombat 3/Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3/Mortal Kombat Trilogy

  • In Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Bi-Han is referred to as "Masked SubZero" in the game's credits. Most publications, however, refer to him as "Classic Sub-Zero".

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero

  • As seen in the cutscenes of Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, Bi-Han has respect for the Grandmaster, yet has a rebellious attitude towards him.

Mortal Kombat 1

  • Bi-Han's virtue as Sub-Zero is presented as "Power".
  • Bi-Han returns as his original Sub-Zero appearance, being the Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei in the new timeline.
  • As with other revamped and reimagined characters, Kuai Liang, his younger brother, is now Scorpion in the new timeline, a departure from the previous iterations of the characters.
  • In his intro dialogue between him and Cage, is where Bi-Han said, "Revenge is a dish best served cold.", with Cage says, "It is very cold in space.", a reference to Khan's quote in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.
  • As Bi-Han begins his Brain Freeze's fatality, he says "你現在死!", which means "You die now!" in Chinese. This phrase was previously said by Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat (2011).

Trivia (as Noob Saibot)

General

  • Bi-Han's name can be transcribed into Chinese 壁漢, literally "flat-jade man", or 避寒, "escape cold".
  • Sub-Zero's original name was going to be "Tundra", which canonically became the younger Sub-Zero's original codename.
  • Noob Saibot is actually 'Boon' and 'Tobias' spelled backward, named so after the co-creators of Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon and John Tobias.
  • In every game in the series from Mortal Kombat: Deception onward, his name is simply written in the lifebar as "Noob". There is a commonly held misconception by fans that since John Tobias left Midway Games, the "Saibot" portion of the name had to be removed for legal reasons. This is false because Tobias does not own the rights to the name of "Saibot"; in fact, the character is still called Noob Saibot during cutscenes and endings. It may be simply the result of the development team splitting up the name Noob-Smoke, but since the character has long been known with his full name, the change seems to come from an arbitrary decision to remove every reference to Tobias, as they have done in every commentary about Mortal Kombat origins in Deadly Alliance and Deception. It wasn't until Mortal Kombat 11 where the "Saibot" portion was fully kept.
  • According to a tweet by Ed Boon, Noob is the character, while Saibot is his Shadow Clone. [4]
    • This is hinted by the name of three of his enhanced moves in MK 2011: Saibot Slide, Saibot Upknee, and Saibot Charge.
  • Noob Saibot guest stars in Midway's 2001 arcade game The Grid, along with Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Unusually, while Scorpion and Sub-Zero re-use their Mortal Kombat 4 models and designs, Noob is presented using a recolored Scorpion model instead of his original model.
  • In MKII, UMK3/MKT, MK4 and MK:TE, Noob Saibot bleeds red blood. In MKD, however, Noob bleeds black blood instead. This has carried over to subsequently released games. Mortal Kombat: Deception, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, and MK (2011) also reveal that his muscles are blue (in Deception and Armageddon they are only seen in Noob's pitch-black costume), though they would be returned to red in Mortal Kombat 11.
  • Noob Saibot's unmasked face has changed between games. In MK4, his second alternate costume depicts him with a skull-like head, whereas his face in MK11, seen if his opponent performs a Fatal Blow and Fatality on him, depicts his head with withered skin and lacking both hair and a nose.
  • Both versions are as well simultaneously active in Malibu Comics' short-lived non-canon Mortal Kombat series.
    • These comics ignored Sub-Zero's inherent evil altogether, as they were released before its first mention in Mortal Kombat Mythologies. Sub-Zero is, however, depicted as being the victor of Shao Kahn's tournament, defeating Goro and claiming the Dragon Medallion, even as he is killed by Scorpion.
    • In Malibu's "Baraka" issue (1995), Noob Saibot appears as a "good guy", and offers Baraka his assistance in hunting Scorpion down and saving an infant Tarkatan (who is considered to be "Outworld's only hope").
  • In a Top 10 video hosted by Screwattack.com, Bi-Han's Make A Wish Fatality appeared as #2 in their Top 10 Gruesome Video Game Deaths, with his As One Fatality being mentioned during the snippet in said placement.
  • The Spine Rip Fatality was inspired by a scene in the first Predator movie.

Mortal Kombat II

  • In Noob's appearance in Mortal Kombat II, his special abilities are copied from Scorpion. This would be repeated for Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition.
  • Losing to Noob Saibot in the SNES version of Mortal Kombat II will cause shouts of "You will die, mortal!" and "Toasty!" from Shao Kahn and Dan Forden, respectively. However, in the Arcade version, Shao Kahn says, "Feel the power of-" and is abruptly cut off by Forden's "Toasty!".
  • In the SNES and Genesis versions of Mortal Kombat II, Noob Saibot is playable via a Game Shark cheat device. Due to a lack of coding for the character as being player accessible, trying to attack with him often crashes the game.
  • In the Sega Genesis version of Mortal Kombat II, Noob Saibot's harpoon is black, in the Amiga version is black/normal, while in all the other versions it has the correct color palette.

Mortal Kombat 3/Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3/Mortal Kombat Trilogy

  • If Bi-Han performs his Animality finisher in the disc versions of Mortal Kombat Trilogy, he will not actually transform or kill his opponent. Instead, he will simply pose, with the announcer declaring Animality nonetheless.
  • In the Nintendo 64 version of MKT, due to the limited amount of space within the cartridge, Bi-Han is the only Sub-Zero featured in the game. To compensate for this, he is given Kuai-Liang's Ice Shower and Ice Clone attacks, as well as his proper Animality finisher. In the Fighter's Kompanion Guide, this version is referred to as Super Sub-Zero.
  • In Mortal Kombat: Deception, it is revealed for the first time that Noob Saibot is actually the original Sub-Zero, and states that he has not seen his brother since becoming a wraith. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks contradicts this, by being set in the Mortal Kombat II timeline and having Sub-Zero aware of Noob's identity. It also claims Noob is "possessed by one of the Elder Gods" which does not sit well with his Deception story. However, the majority of events in Shaolin Monks are regarded by most fans as non-canon due to their contradictory nature.
    • The fact of "being possessed by one of the Elder Gods" could be a reference of his alignment with Shinnok.
  • In Mortal Kombat 3, Noob Saibot is not a fully black 'ninja' palette swap, but is actually a completely black version of Kano, because there are no 'ninjas' in that game. He also has absolutely no special moves but uses some of Kano's combos. Also, in the Sega Genesis port, he even has Kano's Eye Laser Fatality. In the Arcade version of MK3, when Noob wins a round, the announcer says, "Kano shows mercy!" This is an obvious programming glitch.
    • If Sub-Zero sends a blast of ice directly towards Noob Saibot to temporarily freeze them in place for a free hit, Noob Saibot got fully white and invisible. However, in the Genesis version, he is the fully visible Kano.
    • In UMK3 for Sega Saturn, he is obviously the completely black version of Kano, not the ninja in other consoles.
  • Noob Saibot would always be fought in Noob Saibot's Dorfen in the arcade, PlayStation, PC and Saturn versions of MK3 and UMK3. Noob Saibot was also the secret character that could be fought in other stages aside from his own (Noob Saibot's Dorfen), as in MK3 and UMK3 for Genesis and SNES he could only be fought at the Balcony due to the fact that Noob Saibot's Dorfen is not in that version of the game.
  • Losing to Noob Saibot in the arcade version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 will cause Shao Kahn to say, "It's official, you suck!" instead of Noob's actual name. The explanation for this is because Noob Saibot's name is mocked relentlessly, since "noob", "n00b" or "newbie" is a slang term for a novice or newcomer, or somebody inexperienced in any profession or activity, particularly regarding video games and Internet activity.
    • This is further supported in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon when Noob Saibot gains a weapon of his own: Troll Hammer, with troll being a term for those who cause grief and mischief in order to purposefully extract a negative response.
    • Challenge 155 of the Challenge Tower in Mortal Kombat (2011) is called "Still A Noob", mocking Noob Saibot's name even further.
    • This is also referenced during his intro dialogue between Bi-Han (as Sub-Zero) and Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 1, where Bi-Han says to Cage "You can't match my experience." to which Cage replies "Hey! I'm not the noob here."
  • It was not until Trilogy that Noob Saibot finally attained a full sprite palette. Prior to that, it was simply a fully black colored sprite with no tones. In addition, before said game, Noob Saibot would turn white whenever frozen.
  • Despite being an unplayable character in the arcade version of UMK3, Noob Saibot had his own versus screen portrait and can be seen battling Human Smoke. This is because Noob Saibot was supposed to be a playable character like Human Smoke (as hidden), but had not been finished in time. This is also supported by playable ROM versions of the UMK3 arcade. Using a character modifier, Noob Saibot can be selected. When chosen this way, he has Kano's dial-combos and a character select picture that mimics Human Smoke's "?". His stage pattern remains at Noob's Dorfen, similar to Human Smoke's Lost Portal. It was then in the Wave Net edition, that a secret code finally allowed playability of Noob Saibot freely.

Mortal Kombat 4/Mortal Kombat Gold

  • Noob Saibot was planned to be a playable character in Mortal Kombat 4, appearing playable in its earliest builds, but was removed in favor of Reiko, who was made by modifying Noob's model. He instead became a secret character in the home console releases, comprised of his original model and using moves and fatalities borrowed from other characters. Noob had two additional costumes, a shirtless look with a skull head, and a grim reaper-like hoodie with pants. The only thing Noob did not borrow from other characters was his weapon: a long scythe (this would eventually replace Reiko's spiked club in Mortal Kombat Gold). Despite being playable in early versions and eventually being reinstated in the home versions of the game, Noob lacked both a story, bio sequence and an ending.
    • All versions of Mortal Kombat 4 include a "Noob Saibot Mode" kombat kode, which seemingly has no actual effect.
  • Bi-Han made a cameo appearance in the comic Mortal Kombat 4: Limited Edition. In the comic, Kuai Liang went back to China and he found the Temple of Elements after he learned the location from Bi-Han. The event in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero that Bi-Han fought the Gods of Elements is also referred.

Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition

  • Bi-Han as Noob Saibot is seen based off of Scorpion's primary look for Deadly Alliance.

Mortal Kombat: Deception

  • An early Mortal Kombat: Deception costume design for him became Havik, a different character altogether.
  • Upon their appearance in Deception, there has been a massive outcry by fans that Noob and Smoke were a tag-team, as they felt it cheapened the characters' appearance and pushed Smoke (already an underdeveloped character storywise) further into obscurity. This resulted in the characters once more being split into two separate playable entities in Armageddon.

Mortal Kombat (2011)

  • Noob seems to have the same stance as Sub-Zero's in the original Mortal Kombat. This is a nod to him being the original Sub-Zero.
    • Further stating his former identity, when the player uses Sub-Zero's Alternate Costume, most of his sound files are changed to Noob's (albeit without the deep accent), such as his Iceball shout, which is exactly the same as his Ghost Ball shout.
    • Also, Noob's alternate outfit is the same outfit he wore when he appeared as Sub-Zero in the first tournament, save for a few differences: Noob's version has a black tone, and lacks the Lin-Kuei's emblem on the left part of his chest.
  • In the opening cutscene of the MK 2011 Story Mode, Noob Saibot is seen with a sword lodged in his spine. Many believe this sword to be Scorpion's Mugai Ryu.
  • When using Klassic Noob Saibot's alternate colors, Noob will summon Klassic Smoke as opposed to his usual Shadow Clone. Although this may be a reference to the Noob-Smoke alliance from Deception, subsequent matches will replace Smoke with Noob's normal Shadow Clone, implying it might, in fact, be a glitch due to the fact both klassic kostumes were released at the same time. The only way to cause Smoke to reappear is to quit the match and select Noob once again from the character select screen. Even while Smoke is active while playing as Noob, Noob's shadow clone will still be used for the Make-a-Wish Fatality as well as Noob's mid-match victory and victory sequences.
  • Noob Saibot's X-Ray Move is the only one that will make the opponent vomit, which will happen regardless of whether the character is wearing a mask or not.
    • Also, this is the only X-Ray that involves the help of a second "person".
  • During Cyber Sub-Zero's Chapter, he shows a dominating attitude in front of his younger brother and calls him "unworthy of the name Sub-Zero". This attitude towards Kuai Liang could be derived from true disdain, an added effect from his dark resurrection, or a combination of the two.
  • Noob Saibot, donning his klassic costume, can be battled as a secret character in Arcade Ladder. This is done by winning both rounds without blocking in The Cathedral while Noob stands in the background.

Mortal Kombat X

  • When interacting with Sub-Zero, Bo' Rai Cho and Kung Lao, the latter as a Revenant, will mention Noob Saibot, referring to him as Sub-Zero's brother.
    • This is the only instance in which Kuai Liang referred to his brother as "Noob Saibot".
  • In the MKX Story Mode, when trying to persuade a Revenant Kitana, Sareena will mention Noob Saibot by his original name.

Injustice 2

  • Bi-Han is mentioned in Injustice 2 by his brother Kuai Liang, who is featured as a playable guest character in the game.
    • Additionally, two of Sub-Zero's shaders in the game are named after Bi-Han.
  • Bi-Han will also cameo during a mirror match with Sub-Zero, revealing during an interaction that he is freed from Quan Chi's control.

Mortal Kombat 11

  • Noob Saibot is one of the few characters whose appearance in the Arcade is different from his apprearance in the Story Mode.
  • Noob Saibot's usage of a sickle in MK11 is a direct reference to the Brotherhood of Shadow enemies from Shaolin Monks, who similarly wielded sickles in combat.
  • An interaction with Frost reveals Noob Saibot would not allow female Lin Kuei if he were Grandmaster, making Frost say that he is worse than his brother.
  • During interactions, some characters will actually refer to Noob as Bi-Han.
  • Many interactions with Scorpion reference their hatred towards one another as rival clans, the conflict between the two and Noob claiming responsibility for the death of Scorpion's clan and family. However, there is one interaction between the two where Noob questions their partnership since they were both reborn by Quan Chi, to which Scorpion states their allegiance ended when Quan Chi died.
  • Noob Saibot makes a number of pop-cultural references.
    • His MK11 ending in where he claims "Now I am become Death, destroyer of worlds" directly quotes the physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who was credited as being the father of the atomic bomb. The quote itself is from the Bhagavad-Gita.
    • During a mirror match interaction in MK11, he references Harry Potter in which one Noob Saibot will ask "Who are you, ghost?", to which the second Noob Saibot responds "He who shall not be named". Then one Noob Saibot will also respond with: "Return to your deathly hollow."
  • Bi-Han and Kuai Liang are the only klassic trilogy era-based fighters in MK11 who never have their past-selves appeared in its story mode.
  • Through the Kustomization, Noob can look identical to his Shadow Clone.
  • Noob is one of the seven Klassic male ninjas incorporated into Shang Tsung's move list.
    • He, Sub-Zero and Scorpion are all part of Shang Tsung's Fatal Blow.
  • An interaction with his brother reveals that their Grandfather took the mantle of Sub-Zero before the two brothers.
  • Noob Saibot is one of the few characters whose uppercut is from the use of a weapon and not a literal uppercut, resulting in him being one of the few characters that does not literally uppercut the opponent's head off when performing the The Klassic Brutality.

Mortal Kombat Mobile

  • Noob Saibot gains exclusive Krushing Blows for his Shadow attacks not featured in MK11.
  • Like Rain's Klassic card, Noob's Klassic card features his MK3 outfit, which is a reskin of Scorpion's MK3 outfit from MKX.
  • Noob Saibot's MK11 and Klassic cards are the only cards to apply Death Mark, which cancels any form of Resurrection.
    • Interestingly, this effect was originally exclusive to the Talent Tree on the Offensive build.
    • This also makes Noob Saibot the only character whose Fatal Blow, or Special Attack 3, to apply Death Mark to the opponent outside of the Talent Tree bonus.
  • Noob Saibot's MK11 card uses his Story Mode appearance, however a hood is added. This hood is an alternate Kustomization piece for Noob in the Arcade.
  • Noob Saibot, along with Jade's Lizard card, use their Kombat League Season XV outfits, a Saurian-themed Season.

Errors

  • In MK 2011, when Quan Chi shows Scorpion the attack on his family, Sub-Zero is shown wearing the outfit his younger brother wears, not the one he is wearing.
  • In MK 2011, when he is selected in the second color for his Klassic Kostume and is frozen, his arms appear black, while the rest of his body is frozen normally.
  • In MK11, if one inspects Noob Saibot's default mask in the Kustomization, one can see the hooded fabric clips through the end of his sickle on his chest.
  • In MK11, his Shadow Clone has a few errors when inspecting Noob Saibot in the Kustomization;
    • The Clone will clip through Noob's sickle while it's in his shoulder, clipping through both his face and chest when peeking over Noob's shoulder.
    • The Clone's hands clip into or through Noob's shoulders depending on what Kosmetic Skin is selected.
    • The Clone will clip through Noob on occasion while standing behind him.
  • In MK11, Noob Saibot's blood color is red instead of black. This is likely an artistic error.
  • In MK11, Noob Saibot's In The Shadows Brutailty has an incorrect damage calculation when performing the finisher, allowing it be performed on opponents with 20% health despite all basic Throws only dealing 13% damage.
