In 2010, director Kevin Tancharoen released an eight-minute Mortal Kombat film called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, showcasing Michael Jai White as Jax, Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade, Matt Mullins as Johnny Cage, Ian Anthony Dale as Scorpion and Lateef Crowder as Baraka. The film was choreographed by Larnell Stovall.
Ryan later said the short was made as a proof of concept for Tancharoen's pitch of a reboot movie franchise to Warner Bros. Tancharoen later confirmed that while the short is entirely unofficial, it does feature the writing of Oren Uziel, who was rumored to be writing the screenplay for the third MK movie.
It was recently announced that Warner Premiere has ordered a 10-episode web series based on the short. It will star Michael Jai White as Jax and was set to start filming February 2011 in Vancouver, Canada.
